Question Instructions for taking timing belt cover off to inpect the timing belt?

Well my WRX almost has 30K miles and called the dealership for 30K mile maintenance price quote. $580 Can you believe that? Anyway I always change the oil and oil filter every 3K and inspect most of the fluids and belts everytime I do. So will not need that service. Just got an STI drop-in air filter so don't need that either. Also, had the clutch and transmission replaced at 18K so no need to inspect or replace the tranny or clutch. Going to replace the stock plugs with NGK PFR6G's .. so will not need that service.

Good news is I found a dealer that will do all the services but those for about 1/4 of the price. (Replacing brake fluid, cooant, fuel filter, etc...)
Want to check the Camshaft Drive Belt (Timing Belt) myself....would rather do all I can without someone else messing with things and not putting them back right ... if you know what I mean. Instructions? Pictures?

Remove AC/alternator belts, remove crank pulley, remove covers. Pretty easy to do.

Your timing belt is not required to be replaced until 105,000 miles. Taking the timing cover off and checking it will do no good. If, for some reason it does break, (very unlikely), it is covered under your powertrain warranty until 60,000 miles. Taking the timing cover off to inspect it will not show you anything and if you don't know what you are doing and put something back wrong, then you could risk causing damage or getting something caught in there. (don't ask, seen it happen). The covers are sealed, so unless you got a defective belt when the vehicle was built,(or your car has been in a frontal collision) you should be okay until 105,000 or longer.
