it is possible, this install really isn't as hard as most people make it out to be, if you've worked on cars before, and have lots of mechanic ability, its a piece of cake. Took me about 45min the first time I've done it, takes about 30 min now (still doing this without a lift). |

It took me about two hours and a half, and that is with gutting it, also. It wasn't easy, or pleasant, but it wasn't that bad either.

I just installed an ERZ uppipe/downpipe in my 02 WRX last week. We had a bit of trouble getting it out after it was all un-bolted. The funniest part of all is that we ended up removing BOTH motor mounts, jacking up the engine, but still removed the stock uppipe through the top WITH the turbo still in place don't ask. After doing this install, I honestly cannot believe that people were able to remove the stock uppipe without jacking the engine (unless you removed the turbo that is). There is absolutely no wiggle room without doing it. Everything bolted up fine, except for a couple uppipe studs that were too long, but it was no biggie as we just cut them down to size. It took us about 8 hours total to do the uppipe and downpipe, as we ran into small problems along the way with other things...

Just did my up-pipe last friday and took 4 hrs start to finish. Wasn't bad at all, took my time eating pizza, drinking a few beers, helping a friend with his amplifier, etc...
The biggest pain was trimming the heatshield around the 02 in the header collector. |

Im calling BS on that 20 minutes, i dont care if you build subarus for a living, no ****ing way it took 20 mins. Just to loosen all those bolts, and tighten them back down, would take more than 20 mins all together. Youre either taking out the motor, or the turbo. The turbo to remove takes about 20 mins(Remove IC, all hoses, all bolts). so yeah, my ass you finished in 20 minutes

it said the record was like an hour and some change for some dude thats exchanged dozens of up-pipes according to nasioc. i call bs too! I had to take off the turbo and go from the top, and had my friend help and it was a pita.... granted my mechanic skills are somewhat newbius but all you do is follow a guide or instructions and hope for the best.... up-pipe and turbo inlet was the biggest pita to install in my opinion so far... have not done anything to the transmission or engine (internally) so maybe ill change my opinion then...

fastest Sparks & I did up-pipe install with hand tools & drive ramps
was ~45 minutes.. includes dropping down pipe, tmic removal, heat shield removal & modification and of course installing new up-pipe & gaskets. 20 minutes?..hand tools or air tools?..lift?...could be done.. but everything would have to just right..no frozen or stripped bolts/nuts.. |

Tell me what magic tool you used, cause in 20 minutes, you would need to be chuck norris to get the car to cooperate the way you want it to AND be able to manuver said tool below the downpipe and BEHIND the (DP) heat sheild! |

Hahaha yea BS. Even if Chuck Norris, Superman, and Jack Bauer got together they couldn't change an uppipe in 20 minutes. The only way this would be possible is if the engine wasn't in the car, and even then you'd have to be quick.

It took me a long time because I broke my socket wrench, broke the springy exhaust bolts, and drank a lot of beer and took breaks all the time. Without all the trips to the hardware store, autozone, and breaks I think we spent maybe 4 hours actually working. We took the turbo off because I hate messing with motor mounts.

interesting.... i changed my up-pipe all 3 motor mounts with groupe N's, intercooler y pipe silicone hoses, downpipe, step colder plugs, gmbcs, and reflashed all in just under 2 hours, oh and also took the upipe out through the top without removing the turbo....... maybe i did it wrong?

This maybe a dumb question...
Uppipe - exhaust manifold bolts are supposed to be tightened ~28ft. lbs. Has anyone had leaky gasket due to over-tightening? Secondly, how much torque is approximately 28ft/lbs? Thanks. |

28ft/lbs is measurement of Torque - are you looking for a conversion to another unit of measurement? |
