Default loud banging from rear in 05 sti on track

car has just over 1,000 miles on it and had its first event this weekend. when i would be pulling a hard turn at high speeds as i was holding the turn it sounded like metal just banging around in the rear end. i can compare it with if your kicking up rocks into the wheelwell but there were no rocks. i didn't feel any difference in the handling while it the sound occured but am worried that it might present a problem later. anyone else have this problem?

could be pad knockback....on the brakes....could be swaybar endlinks....could be the rear Diff mounts(rubber) sloshing around....

not during shifting or braking, this is right in the middle of a corner pretty much while tracking out after the apex if you want to know exactly where. and this is alot louder than a pad knockback.

Did your rear swaybar flip over on the endlinks? Better check it...

Rocks kicking up into wheelwell? Have never heard of that.

If it was 1 or 2 loud bangs and shudders on throttle pickup, congrats, you have experienced rear wheel lift + throttle application + wonderful crappy rear STi diff. The STi rear diff freaks when one wheel is in the air and sends all power to the wheel in the air. Once that wheel touches the ground, it shocks the rear diff and you get a bang or two.

But in all seriousness, I vote rear diff or DCCD unhappiness. Did it happen again, or just that once?

luckily neek she wasn't in my group but unfortunately she was in yours and she sure past you. i do have to say in the last session where she took my car out cause her brakes were fried. all i have to say is damn! she was really flying, scared me a few times in 4 when she was late apexing all i kept thinking of was the 996 turbo that went off just a session earlier. wierd thing was though that the noise didn't happen when she was driving just when i was driving......... it would happen mostly coming out of turn 6 and it was coming from the back right, if i'm full throttle from the turn in at the top maybe the back right is lifting? hard to imagine, plus i think it would sound different from what i'm hearing.

oh and neek what do you think that noise was coming from my turbo that we heard, i'm still baffled about it. and how would you explain that sound to someone?

Really strange sound. I didn't get a good enough listen to have any idea what it was.

I had problems with my rear sway bar bushing been pushed out at the track on my 04 STi. With no bushing it made a lot of noise around corners.

Did you take out the spare tire, jack, and "tool kit"?

Hmm... I don't think that the '05 bar can flip. I *believe* there was a change in the design back there (the endlink was close enough that the bar would just sit on it, rather than have room to flip). I was concerned about that when installing the rear bar on our '05, but was assured by Master P0rt4r that it couldn't flip.

My vote is for diff. My '04 would have diff problems at 5mph on slightly uneven slope, so I have no doubt that the '05 can have some problems at more than 10 times that speed mid corner. Wheel lift is a bitch in these cars.

+1, My 04 would even do it stock, have to run the rear sway on full soft now.

A clanky diff is not a problem.... unless you expect a Cadillac-quiet sports car. The race car I drove last weekend had a diff that sounds like 3 cannonballs in a 55 gallon barrel.
