Default Loss Of Power after a few minutes of driving :(

I have a 2009 Impreza Outback Sport 4EAT which has 39000miles , and recently, I have noticed while driving, that my engine will loose engine power while im driving. This did not happen before I did an oil change. For my oil change, I used 5w-30 Pennzoil Ultra, Full synthetic. Anyways, heres what happens. When I first start the car in the morning, and let the engine heat up for about 10minutes, That is when the Engine feels like it has its maximum potential. Feels just as strong as day one. However, If I continuously keep running the engine, and driving, after about 10mins, there is a noticable amount of power gone from the engine. This is what I have done to make sure I wasn't just acting weird. I did a 30mph roll to 35mph (max speed is 35mph). After the engine has heated up, the 5mph difference was easy for my impreza. It felt crispy and lively However, after that 10minutes past, it seems like the power is gone the same test, 30 to 35mph, just felt dull. It took awhile for the RPM's to hit and finally bring the car up to speed.

I have not done any mods other than the resonator delete, and the Oil i used for the Oil change was Pennzoil Ultra 5w 30, fully synthetic.

What could be the issue?

If you're talking about an intake resonator, removing those has been shown to cause problems, but not like you describe. I think the 09's have the WRX-style air intake, pulling outside are instead of engine bay air. Maybe without the resonator you're pulling warmer air? That sounds more like your problem. Also, I thought I've heard of some newer years needing a ECU adjustment from Subaru. Search about that because I don't know the specific years involved.

Sounds like a 4EAT symptom. Once the trans fluid and internals are @ temp they will behave differently. Tq converter could be less "locked", fluids could be less viscous... I'm no auto trans. guru, though.

Ill put the resonator back in, and tell you what happens. Hope thats it, but I kind of doubt it, due to this issue never happening right away. I had the resonator removed for about a month now, and this issue has only started a week ago, but didnt think to post it since i thought it was just the gas i had just fueled up with.

hmm. If this were true, wouldn't my performance be better since the oils are heated up and less energy is needed to move through the viscous oil?

Are you sure it's the engine slowing you down? One of my coworkers had an issue where after driving stop-and-go traffic the engine just couldn't get the car to more. Turns out his brake master cylinder was shot and kept applying brakes which seemed like an engine problem. Maybe yours is also a brake problem. Check wheel/brake temps on all 4 corners after you see this symptom.

Then again it could be heat soak.

^ill check that, but i put the resonator back on, and my engine was back up to performance, and exceeded how it felt from the beginning. (beginning was a salvaged subie, which was sitting around for a while with bad gas)

And like RaceFace said, the auto transmissions are programmed to hold out the gears longer until the cats are warmed up. The difference is minimal but it does feel "better" before it warms up, the trans doesn't seem to hunt for gears as much. But again, it's not really a "performance loss" so look into the other possibilities as well. Now that your resonator's back in, you should check out the hybrid thread. Stock intake works very well tho, I'm not as familiar with the 09 hybrid setup but I know there are threads on it.

Oh. I see.

Ah, the resonator delete was an excuse to have a hybrid air intake. Thing is though, I dont have the money to buy a hybrid intake.

Actually thee hybrid intake we're talking about is pretty inexpensive, mine cost forty bucks for everything. Check out the thread at the top of the NA page titled "The problem with CAIs/SRIs and finally an alternative", it details the whole process and has tons of interesting information. The guy who wrote it, Williaty, provides some of the most tested and proven info for our cars, search his name and read anything he's written. He's our Jeebus! It'll help weed out the misinformation.

Oh wow! I looked that thread up and saw the hybrid intakes for $150 so i got turned off by that tag. But now that you mention $40. Sounds like a mod thats bound to happen

Thanks!

Be advised that on the 08+cars, many people have tried the hybrid and ended up going back to stock, myself included. It gave significant gains above 4200 rpm, but significant losses below that, at least on my car.*
My 09 is my daily driver, and i couldn't live with the lost torque, I spend 99% of the time below 3000rpm.

*However, this was on the stock tune. Even with the stock air intake, the MAF needed a serious rescale.
I haven't yet tried the hybrid intake following this to see if the rescale has made a difference, but i'm hoping it will, or at worst i'm hoping that another tune following the hybrid intake installation will sort things out, I would love to have those high rpm gains if I can at least not lose anything low down. To be continued....
