Welp- I dove in today and painted mine. Didn't read through the end of the thread I see now that people aren't using metalcast which is what I used but if they last a year I'll be ok.

Didn't go perfectly to plan, was supposed to be sunny and dry out today but when I woke up the forecast had switched to cloudy and was about 70% humidity. I don't think I waited quite long enough between coats to compensate for the humidity and had a couple tiny spots where the red looked like it ran away from the tape when I put the clear on. My garage is kind of dark and even though I was checking for imperfections I didn't see them till they had been drying for a couple hours and took them into the sun to check them out.

Word of advice: don't use the clear op pictured unless you have a fan tip to swap out- came out like a stream and if I had to do it again I'd use a clear with a fan tip for less force onto the paint when applying clear (I have a sneaking suspicion the little runs wouldn't have happened if I had used a fan tip).

Also before I painted them, I removed the tails, taped them off, then reinstalled and checked the lines. They were off by a hair and while they were on the car I lined them up perfectly. Very happy I did- looks completely professional and perfectly aligned while jumping the gap from inner to outer.

Anyway- SUPER GLAD I put them back on to check the alignment of top and bottom tape from inner to outer because they looks crip and perfectly lined up. Not to toot my own horn but they look factory, couldn't be much happier (other than the super little runs under the clear which I don't think anybody but me will ever get close enough to see). I'll probably buy a stock set and repaint them in the summer to get rid of the little spots I'm not happy with but great write up, pretty easy-the hardest part was taping off the back of the housings but I completely covered them and probably didn't need to- to do and make the car look 10x better. Smiling ear to ear haha.

Thanks everybody!

screwed up my 1 year old VHT painted + clear coated tails up with some stupid 'Wipe New' - I thought I was adding protection but after about 7-8 months the wipe new crap started looking a little faded...tried another coat....just made it worse...lightly sanded, re-sprayed clear and they look crappy, unsmooth.

wasn't there another thread about some guy offering a service w/lifetime warranty to do this?

Just did mine today and fairly pleased with how they came out. VHT nightshades and acrylic lacquer clear. Really grateful for the info on this thread. The clear feels like it will take some time to fully cure, so I'll plan to wet sand and polish later. That should clean up the orange peel that's going on. Even now it's pretty amazing how much of an improvement this 'mod' makes.

Things I learned (i.e. goofed up):

- Careful when removing the inner (hatch) half, one of mine popped out surprisingly and ended up on the ground. Luckily the damage was minor.

- Don't try to wipe this paint if you get a run. I was tempted into doing this and it made a much worse mess. Luckily I was able to sand it smooth before applying the next coat and it filled in ok in the end.

- Excess paint lines from improper masking can be removed with brake fluid, but you have to rub for a good while.

- It's hard to avoid specks of dust getting in the paint, which is especially apparent on this kind of job. I'm hoping the wet sanding will fix that. Maybe next time I'll make some kind of paint booth.
