According to this thread, you can tint all around, but can't get anything less than 70%.

You can't have any film on any windows according to the books. A few days ago I went to a inspection station which was allegedly lenient about tinting but they told me no. I have to remove the tint on my car asap unless someone can recommend a shop that might turn a blind eye to it.

Look here: http://home.pcisys.net/~bpc/auto_law/tint/tint_ri.html

Basically 70% for the rear windows only, pshh why bother !!? Any station that tells you no tint is not up to date on current inspection law. Also read that the tinter has to place a decal on the window stating his name and the % tint.

RI is 70%. The inspection station didn't know the law. (70% is pretty weak tho...) I'd be almost of the inclination to report the station to the state if they're refusing something that's perfectly legal.

http://www.rilin.state.ri.us/statute.../31-23.3-4.HTM

§ 31-23.3-4 Exemptions. – The provisions of this chapter shall not apply to:
3) The use of nontransparent or sunscreen material or window application on motor vehicles which has a total visible light transmittance of not less than seventy percent (70%) measured perpendicular to the surface of the glass on the windshield and side windows immediately adjacent to the right and left of the operator's seat, the side windows immediately to the rear of the operator's seat and the front passenger seat or on the rear window if the vehicle is equipped with two (2) outside mirrors, one on each side, adjusted so that the driver has a clear view of the highway behind the vehicle.

Damn..sorry 'bout that; you're right. Damn lawyer speak. Why can't they write laws more simply. Still 70% sucks. It's not even worth it.

Not that everyone follows laws... but why do I sometimes see tinted cars in RI (very dark all around)... have these people just not been caught?

And... it's always usually an old corolla that's fallin' apart too...

Pretty much. I had 50% when I had my black RS in RI. Never got stopped. Never did much to attract attention either.

Yep exactally. I went to the tint shop and they said they'd do it, but I'd have to peel it every 2 years to get inspected... My old WRX bought in MT had 20% rear 30% sides and was here for 6 months and I never had an issue at all. Basically the cops won't pull you over for it, but if they pull you over for something else they can then be dicks if they want. Rumor has it you can get it "prescribed" by an eye doctor, then the shop that installs it has to put a sticker on it, and then you have to go get the tint and that sticker inspected somewhere to make it legit, but I don't know how true that is. The "rumor" was told to me by a kid in the tint shop.

Yep. Anyone doing their job is a d*ck. So... by that definition, everyone in the office here is a d*ck. Except me, because I spend my days on NESIC.

No, sorry, not meant like that... I respect LEO, but my point is if they pull you over for say speeding and you have window tint, ods are no matter what you will get written up for something, where as getting over for just speeding without tint I can usually charm them out of a ticket and into a warning...
