I'd own one. Cheap enough to beat up. Purpose built. Could be a good little compact race car. But if I were going to buy a seasonal vehicle it would probably be a ******* *****. And I would track it at real tracks and also DD it.

No room for AWD or a turbo, but possibly room for an EJ20/25.
It's purpose-built and makes more sense for Subaru to have a piece of the profit from their own engineering instead of letting Toyota be the sole benefactor. It's not meant to replace your WRX/STI. You're missing the point if you believe that. If you guys support this car then there's a strong possibilty that we'll see a return of RWD, front-engined JDM vehicles. Also, this is Subaru's 2nd RWD car and it's only been about 16 years since Subaru has been all AWD in their line-up. Be enthusiasts, not purists. |

Looking forward to the LA Motor Show to see the production model unveiled. The STi version should be pretty sick and I look forward to seeing what they have decided to do with the STi version. For the price and the styling of the car I think it's pretty bad ass. I may have to start thinking about buying a house instead of a another new car, but it's a car I would not mind ordering direct from Subaru.
It is not made to replace the STi or WRX. Most are saying get this for the daily, save the STi for the go fast race car. It's unquie and it's different, I think it's about time Subaru came out with something like this. I already have one AWD car, why would I need another one? Especially if I'm looking to save on gas, but still have fun at the same time. |

"The Subaru BRZ is the result of one of the auto industry's oddest joint ventures since Alfa Romeo and Nissan hooked up in the 1980s to produce the ARNA, a car that spectacularly combined the worst features of both: It had Alfa Romeo's suspect reliability and Nissan's boring styling and sloppy handling. This time, though, everyone looks like a winner. Subaru gets a great sports car it couldn't afford to build, and Toyota gets a great sports car, to be badged as a Scion here in the United States, that it couldn't find room to build"

Why can't Subaru spend their time making a street legal 2800lb 400hp STI instead of building a Toyota

I think it has potential to be badass. I however have no need to RWD at the moment, shoot I don't even autox (yet).

It is a neat car. And all cars are compromises. They(Toyota and Subaru) were going for low CG and light weight in a street legal car; they achieved that. AWD was a casualty of the quest for lightness. The handling dynamics are probably great, no doubt better than a WRX/STI.
But, very mediocre power in an enthusiast's car like this seems like a mistake. Hopefully the next version will have an extra 80hp or so. That would be a fun ride. |

Yeah heated leather seats and other gizmo stuff have nothing to do with it. The 2004 STis curb weight is 3,260lbs and the 2011 are 3,400lbs. Hell the 2011 WRX has the same 0-60 times as the STi just because of the 200lb difference. I think the four door makes a big difference though.

Honestly, I bought my 2.5i for the AWD and the handling since I live in a state where it snows almost 5 months out of the year. I have a lot more fun with my car in the snow. Having said that I would rather have a small, light RWD car if I lived somewhere snow and ice weren't a factor. This car would be on my list for sure if I lived in, say Arizona.

We also have yet to see the brand new WRX and STi that may have the new motor. I would be excited for that, but I'm not paying $38-40,000.00 for an STi. |

I think its great that Toyota and Subaru are trying something new. That's always a good thing. And let's face it, Toyota probably called the shots. Subaru's annual budget is only a few percent of Toyota's. |

I find it alarming how ignorant people are when they think you need AWD and a turbo to do anything in a performance car. In Alaska I agree but in other parts of the world that application doesnt hold nearly as much of a benefit as you would think.
Just remember rear wheel drive dominates in the performance world in everything except rally cross. The first 1 million dollar car was a mid engine rear wheel drive naturally aspirated Mclaren F1 and set the land speed record for fastest street legal vehicle at over 240 MPH and has a huge racing legacy. The first car to beat the speed record over 10 years later was the bugatti veyron which gets its face kicked in by cars with 2/3rds of the power on a race track. AWD only matters where it is a niche in the racing world when it comes to the top cars in the industry. Forced induction is never necessary unless you are trying to meet certain weight parameters and even then its debatable and nobody in their right mind would prefer turbo lag over an equally powerful naturally aspirated power plant if you can build the cars around the same or similar parameters when it comes to weight, handling, power and dimensions. The BRZ is much lighter and does not need the same kind of power as a WRX/STI to do what its intended purpose is. Guaranteed a BRZ will smoke you in autox and you will think differently after. If you haven't driven a light weight RWD naturally aspirated car in your life time then I suggest you try it out someday. Easy example regardless of how pathetic they look is picking up a RX-7, Miata, MR2/MRS or S2K. I now welcome the BRZ/FR-S to the wonderful list of Japanese RWD sports cars that many enthusiasts will appreciate. |

If the base has 200hp from a naturally aspirated 2.0l 4 cylinder I'm pretty sure an sti/turbo'd version will be pretty dang peppy.
I agree with all the comments on Subaru making this move. It's nice to see something a little "different" come out. |

I may be interested in Toyota version pending on what TRD does with it.
Just did a quick google on the TRD FR-S, and I'm liking what I see. about the car being quicker than an STi. Just ask Mavrik how much horsepower is needed to be faster than Turbo AWD cars. Last edited by LiLpNoY; 11-13-2011 at 08:15 PM. |
