Default Have you ever ruptured your ear drum?

Last sunday, I busted my ear drum spearfishing. It's the second time I've done it, but this go round was a lot worse, and 10 times more painful. Has anyone else done this, and how long did it take before you felt better?

I ruptured an eardrum firing a handgun a few years ago. Yes, it is painful. Took me a month or so to heal fully. And even then, it would ache every so often.

See your doctor and he can give you some antibiotics for it... which is a good idea, because with a ruptured ear drum you can get a bacterial infection in your now-exposed inner ear.

Fell off my waverunner at WOT after bouncing off a wave. Must have hit the water wrong. I knew something wasn't right when I ear started bleeding. Hurt like H3LL

On the upside, I got looked at by a super HOT resident at the Northwestern ER.

Almost blew both of mine out doing an underwater cutting job in Seattle. I also did a dive (or tried to) in WI with plugged sinuses. Both of which were very painful and were not things I'd like to repeat. Good luck man...how deep were you?

I was spear fishing in key biscane FL. I was free diving. Now, I'll admit, I've never snorkeled, dived, or anything of the sort before, so I wasn't properly trained in equalizing the pressure. Nevertheless, I was about 15ft down, and was fine as far as pressure was concerned. I shot the fish, and had to go get the spear and such. I was running out of air, and had to go down 5 or so more feet to grab it. Then I pushed off the bottom as hard as possible. I'm almost positive it was the instant pressure change that did it, but DAMN did it hurt.

I ruptured mine last weekend. Fukcing sucks donkey balls.

I was getting over a cold, nothing major, slight runny nose. Flew into Denver, upon landing the pressure was incredibly intense (never had problems flying before), it absolutely killed my ears. It didn't rupture then but it put a lot of junk in my ears. The next night I rolled over on my right side (the bad ear) and I could feel all the fluid and nastiness just shift into my ear. It was incredibly painful, at that point I knew I had some type of infection.

Went to urgent care that morning. Got some antibiotics for the infection, but it still hurt like a bitch. I had to drive up into the mountains for my friend's wedding right after. The drive up was OK, but coming back down is when I think it ruptured. It's hard to tell exactly when it ruptured because of all the junk in my ears, but I think it was he drive down. It's painful as hell now.

Had to cancel my original flight back, which cost way more than I wanted. Tried to give my ear a little more time to heal. Flying back actually wasn't bad on my ruptured ear because there was no pressure buildup anymore, my other ear certainly hurt though. I went to the doctor when I got back, still taking antibiotic pills and drops.

Now I'm pretty much 100% deaf in my right ear. Everything is super muffled with a nice ringing to it. Have to get my hearing checked in a month, I really hope it heals OK. It's hard to blow your nose without redamaging it. At least I got some vicodin out it.

Done it many times. Cant hear much at all any more. The best is when you're underwater setting anchors and they blow. Hello stream of bubbles.

Stay on the ABX and flush them out often once youre healed up. Do not let the wax build up otherwise it will take much more effort to break it free. Amazon sells an Elephant ear. Buy it. Fill with 2/3 warm water 1/3 h2o2. Mix and GENTLY dislodge the wax.

Enjoy having an excuse to say "huh" every time your wife talks.

Good luck with that. It'll be awhile before things return to normal. Remember, crushing and snorting vicodin is more effective!

I hear you man. Oof, that brings back bad memories. I had ear tubes for closed Eustachian tubes for the first ~10 years of my life. I've been under about 8 times for ear tube surgery and have had more ear infections than I can count. That grumbling noise and shifting feeling you described is one of the worst. That's a sharp pain usually, then comes the wall of blunt pain with pressure and some pangs, then the ringing. It gets better when you get the antibiotics in there.

In relation to the first part of the thread, I did have to get my eardrum lanced to reinsert an ear tube that fell out. I was at the doctor's office and just told them that it wasn't worth waiting for a date at the hospital and getting anesthetized again, so I just told them to lance it and reinsert the tube without anesthesia. Christ, that hurt. My mom told me my face was whiter than the paint on the walls.

My ear actually felt pretty good at the party, about the only time on the trip it was OK. I'm sure getting hammered didn't exactly help my situation though.

Ugh, sucks Rasta. Sorry to hear that. I was plagued with ear infections as a kid. As an adult, not so much, but about ten years ago I had yet another one while I had the flu. It was one of those quick onset jobbers, where the pain became intense in a matter of hours. No health insurance at the time (yeehaw) so it was off to the nearest immediate care clinic. Diagnosis: yep, bad ear infection. Doc said to basically RUN, not walk to the pharmacy to obtain antibiotics. Head to pharmacy, hand in my prescription, and just rested my head against the wall. As the pharmacist calls my number, PAFFF, my eardrum just exploded. Stick my finger in my ear and pull out a bunch of blood and pus. As horrifyingly awful as that was, it was instant relief.

Couldn't hear jack for a few weeks after that. Eventually regained my hearing, and recovered fully.
