Default Stick shift vibration with STi short throw shifter

I do not like cross posts myself but it looks like I am getting no help with this one in the warranty forum. So maybe somebody here has an idea.

Thanks and here goes my problem.

Ok so as the title says I have an STi short throw shifter on my car. The story goes like this. I wanted the short throw shifter on my car when I bought it but they did not have it with a short throw one. So they installed it about 5 days after I purchased it (when the parts came in).
Now with the stock shifter I had no problems whatsoever. Normal stick shift vibration thing but this is normal. Now after they installed the short throw shifter in I had a very noticeable vibration at 4000rpm. You go over 4000rpm vibration is gone, under 4000rpm is ok as well. But if you make the mistake and try to shift at 4000rpm you will hear a metallic vibration coming from the shifter linkage as it goes outside the current gear gate and enters the next one. And my hand is almost hurting.
I have about 1800 miles now on the car and I think the vibration is becoming worse. Now there are already short moments when you can hear the think while fully in gear (around 4000rpm only).
So I tried I think 2 times to get it fixed at the dealership (2 different ones). They tried to find what causes this but they were utterly unsuccessful. I cannot not they they did not cooperate or something else but they were unable to find the problem and fix it.
So here I am with this vibration and I am in desperate need of some help. Would you think that I have a defective STi part or any other ideas would be appreciated. Currently I have a dealership working on this and trying to find the root of the problem but without too much success yet.

I have the sti short shifter and no problem as you mention.
Except it is quite a bit notchier than stock.

I would tell them to put a new one in for you and include new bushings as well.

It sounds like a poor install. It only does it a 4000RPM, like most NVH that happens at a specific RPM only is that at 4000RPM the trans vibrates at a sympathetic frequency. This causes the vibration to go "coocky."

Like that bridge that fell in WA a few decades back.

Something is either missing or loose.

Yeah you are right. It looks like a resonance issue. I guess something is not right or loose in the linkage.

I was thinking of installing harder bushings and transmission mounts. Somebody here told me that the STi short throw shifter comes with already harder bushings. Is this true? And if yes does it still make sense to put even harder bushings?

I hope they will find a solution to this issue. If not probably I will push to get a new linkage under warranty.

I have the fix for this problem. Mine was the same and Subaru couldn't fix (dummies). Takes but 20min

I will try to explain the fix.

You will need to remove 1/32" to 1/16" off your shifter bushing that goes thru the yoke below your shifter knob. It is too long and doesn't allow the urethane bushings to remove the vibration.

Instructions
(1)remove shifter knob and consul to get to the bolt that is in the yoke just above the nylon ball of the shifter.
(2)remove yoke bolt and the steel bushing that goes where you just took the bolt from. Bushing goes thru blue urethane washers
(3)remove 1/16" from one end of the bushing(from memory I think that then makes it 33.5mm long but could be wrong) using a file(or lathe) ensuring that you keep it square on the end.
(4)replace bushing and grease(lots) urethane inside and on the edges that come in contact with the yoke using some extra grease hanging around the nylon shifter ball.
(5)Tighten up the bolt so as the shifter moves freely. If you have taken to much off it will tighten up the shifter so it will feel harder to shift. Do not worry as what you do is get the bolt from you orginal stock shifter(its longer)and then what you do is tighten till you feel it is firm but easy to shift and then get another nut and screw on so as you have 2 nuts on the same bolt and what you do is tighten one up against the other so as locking the point of feel you want. That is what I did
(6)Obviously if 1/16" doesn't allow you to get the shifter to get tighter take a little more off the bushing.

Result
NO RATTLE And BETTER SHIFTING

I'm a machinist by trade so what works for me you do at you own risk etc etc etc.

To be exact the vibration is in 3rd gear at 3800rpm and in second and 5th sometimes.

In my case the vibration is present in all the gears. Most annoying is 2, 3, 4. And yes you are are right. It is at exactly at 3800 rpm (approx 4000rpm as I said before).
I will give it a try to see what I get.

Thanks,
Florian

hate to tell you this but ALL short shifters will have vibrations.
the stock shifter is encased in a rubber sleave. this is what reduces the noise and vibrations. when that is removed shift feel is greatly improved, but at a slight cost.

Default Mine vibrates in everygear

Simple solution...buy Kart Boy bushings..and Grp N tranny mount....vibration gets worse......now for the fix....

Stop using the shifter as a hand rest....change gear and return hand to steering wheel!!!

;-)

Sorry could not resist....sounds like your problem is worse than most, but all short shifters do it!!

I agree. You are going to get more NVH. The thing is, short shifters and performance bushings are designed to take slop out of the whole linkage, which unfortunately is usually there in terms of softer (more vibration absorbing) materials and slight amounts of play in the construction so it doesn't transmit the vibrations.
It's the price you pay...
