You do know that Toyota foot the bill, correct? I hear what you're saying, but I don't think you're paying attention, or I'm misunderstanding something HUGE, which is completely possible. Precedents have been set.

Precedents aside, chanomatik is, I believe, correct. For Subaru, It should have been a big time money maker.

Subaru said "have high expectations for the next WRX" so I will! :-)

When SOA Blog speaks... it might be worth paying attention.
I'm also surprised that when someone posted something interesting a couple months back, it was written off as being "old" and "we've already seen it." |

The new WRX will need to be on the shortened Impreza chassis (BRZ) in order to compete in rally. Why would they develop the BRZ, spend all of that time researching a pure-sports car and then not have that DNA trickle down to the WRX?

Is a chassis specifically designed for an RWD vehicle also optimal for competing in AWD motorsports? (I honestly don't know... this is a serious question.)

The only issue with the BRZ is that the engine is mounted too far back for AWD. So put the engine forward and bolt it to different points. Not a big deal. We use one chassis for all Subarus, all different sizes, yet people think the BRZ is some unadjustable frame. |

One of the quotes given was something along the lines of...if it weren't for our involvement in the BRZ the next WRX would not have happened. I have a bunch of old quotes, but I haven't been able to find this one again. From what I remember, the author was alluding to the fact that there was a lot learned from the BRZ development and would be applied to the WRX.

Probably not, but the BRZ is based on a modified Impreza frame, a frame that could be modified again. Who knows, maybe during the BRZ development someone did an AWD version as a " design exercise" or alternative design for consideration, using some of the Toyota technologies used for the BRZ.

Subaru has yet to make a performance car that I'd rather have over my swapped GC. A BRZ sized/based STI would probably change that, especially if they do as good of a job on styling as they did on the BRZ. Fingers crossed....

Thanks for informing me, though. It seemed conceivable to me that there might be ways of tweaking a chassis (i.e. strengthening it in certain areas or lightening it in certain areas) that benefitted particular drivetrain layouts. Is it accurate to say a WRX would be built on a BRZ chassis then, since all Subarus use one chassis of different sizes? Couldn't you just as easily say BRZ is built on a sized-down Tribeca chassis as a sized-down Impreza chassis? OK, I think I'm getting silly and a bit facetious here, even if I'm not fully grasping the semantics of the point at which a chassis becomes a new chassis and not a modified chassis. OK... time for me to move on here... I'm not being beneficial to this thread. |

The entire US Subaru lineup has evolved from the Legacy chassis. So theorizing that it will be BRZ based really just speaks to the size of the car IMO.

Alright. So the speculation is that it could be built on a BRZ-sized Legacy chassis, like the BRZ is.
I think I nailed it. |

Sort of. The BRZ is based on the Impreza chassis, which in turn is based on the Legacy chassis. So they are speculating that it could be on a BRZ-sized, Impreza-sized Legacy chassis, like the BRZ is.

I would guess that is in reference to the car they are going to give us that we are supposed to "have high expectations" for. If there was no BRZ project, we'd be getting the same ole ho hum WRX/STI. With more horsepower I'm sure, but just an Impreza with better suspension and brakes. But the WRX/STI we WILL be getting is derived directly from what they have been learning from the BRZ. Hurry up and BRING IT!!! |

Agreed, but I bet it isn't anywhere near the amount Toyota spent, and they got to examine/use some of Toyota technologies.
I have seen the "have high expectations for the next WRX" quote also. Last edited by a2cpc; 10-11-2012 at 08:43 AM. |
