Default PRL Motorsports Product Line Testing and Development

We have been working hard to ensure the highest quality on our new FA20 product line. Our TGV deletes and charge pipe kit have already been released, and our intake system and downpipe / J-pipe assembly will be ready for the public within the next week or two.

However, how can we release our products and claim any gains without testing? We can't, it's just not ethical.

The entire product line was designed off of our Welder, Dave's 2015 WRX, but all of the mods are going on at the same time. A local customer was kind enough to lend us his WRX to individually install and test each of our products to provide data for us and most importantly, you the consumers.

All testing will be performed on a DynoJet 424 Linx. Roller weights cannot be manipulated, ensuring an accurate readout.

Stay tuned!

TGV Deletes:

Charge Pipe Kit:
Our charge pipe kit replaces the restrictive factory hot side charge pipe on the 2015+ WRX. The factory charge pipe becomes restrictive with its corrugated section, irregular bends and bottlenecks. This kit is designed to increase air flow to allow optimal performance while retaining a factory fitment and look.

All pipes come powdercoated standard textured black, bead-rolled and hand made in the USA. Our 2-bolt aluminum flange is CNC'd in house and 3D ported to allow optimal flow. We provide everything needed to assure a perfect fitment, including high quality 4-ply silicone couplers and guided T-bolt clamps.

Default J-Pipes

J-Pipes:
Each piece uses 3D CNC ported 1018 cold rolled steel flanges mated to 304 stainless 3" tubing. All products are handmade and checked for perfect fitment.

This downpipe / J-pipe assembly will be 2 pieces, giving customers the ability utilize the factory catalytic converter by using only the downpipe. A catted J-pipe will not be offered because there is no way for us to include a high quality cat for an affordable price. Most aftermarket cats offered with other downpipe / J-pipe assemblies are inferior compared to the OEM cat. Using the J-pipe will make the exhaust system catless.

Additional o2 bung included for customers using a wideband sensor.

Default Intake System

Intake System:
One of the largest problems with most intake systems (aftermarket or factory) is actually maintaining "cold air." The factory air duct has proved to be an efficient piece in maintaining cold air, so we decided to not reinvent the wheel and utilize the factory air duct. We then designed a box to house the air filter for heat and any possible weather protection, which the air duct leads to. Finished boxes will be laser cut and powder coated in black for an OEM look.

Our intake utilizes factory mounting points, but uses 3" aluminum piping that will be powder coated in black as well. A velocity stack to K&N air filter is also included to ensure optimal air flow, with high quality 4-ply couplers and clamps to ensure nothing comes apart while driving down the highway, and will last for years to come.

The intake system also utilizes the factory MAF sensor with a MAF extension and our CNC'd radiused MAF flanges.

A tune IS required due to the full 3" intake including the MAF housing, not like the tapered down systems some competitors may offer.

Possibly, we are testing to see how much airflow actually increases. We are thinking so.

nice to see a US company actually backpurging their stainless welds, unlike some...

Totally agree with you!

Backpurging is the only way we will weld any of our stainless products!

Our local customer just dropped off his WRX yesterday. We already dyno'd the car to get a baseline with a 3" exhaust installed and a Cobb Stage 1 flash. All testing will be done on the same exhaust and flash. Dave is working on finishing up some welds, then we are ready to test the mid pipe and J-Pipe individually!

More pictures to come!

The midpipes were finished up today, as well as dyno testing for each of our J-pipe pieces. We are VERY pleased with the numbers, and fitment is like factory. Stay tuned for dyno graphs!

I am a tuner willing to test the parts on a 2015 Forester XT (CVT Transmission of course). So far most parts that have fit the CVT WRX have fit well on the Forester XT too. I know that the Forester market is always feeling left out from all the R&D on aftermarket parts.

To clarify: I am located in Phoenix, AZ

Okay guys, we were just as excited as you were (I hope) for some dyno graphs, so we stayed late to produce numbers! We couldn't be any happier with what we saw! All pulls were done today, the same day, with a stock 2015 WRX, 3" ETS dual exit exhaust and Cobb Stage 1 reflash.

Stage 1 Baseline

Stage 1 with Midpipe Only and OEM Primary Cat

Stage 1 with J-Pipe and Midpipe

Stage 1 with J-Pipe, Midpipe and Charge Pipe Kit

Stage 1 Total Comparison

Midpipe: Overall we saw increased spool, an average 15-20 hp and tq gain throughout the midrange over stock, and 13whp / 18 ft/lbs tq at peak.

J-Pipe w/ Midpipe: We saw more spool, about 5 to 10 hp and tq midrange gain over just the midpipe, and the same who with 15 ft/lbs tq at peak.

Charge Pipe Kit with J-Pipe/Midpipe: This is what surprised us the most! We saw major spool gains, 10-30 hp and tq throughout the midrange, and 19whp and 33 ft/lbs tq at peak. We also experienced an increase of 1.5psi to 2psi boost increase! IAT's stayed at a consistent 79 degrees during street testing in boost and moving, with a peak temp of 113 degrees at a near standstill driving around after numerous pulls.

Next comes the TGV Deletes and intake testing!

Nice! I appreciate the write up and testing. Always great to see real world results. Great job.

I'm surprised you saw more boost. Was it just the initial spool that was showing higher psi or was it later in the powerband?

Did the tune change between mods, or just Stage 1 tune and simply bolting on the mods for these pulls?

All the posted runs were done on the Stage 1 mapping. We pulled the car off the dyno onto the four post lift for swapping the exhaust pieces, then directly back onto the dyno. The charge pipe was done on the dyno without even un-strapping.

We will keep that in mind. We normally handle all testing in house, but if we need an outside tester, we will keep you posted.

The extra boost was at peak boost. And yes, all tests were done back to back, no tuning, just an OTS Stage 1 reflash, never leaving the dyno/post-lift.

Thanks. I'm sure everyone wanted to know that to see if the gains were essentially for the parts alone.

No real use testing on a stock flash, and not everyone will run Stage 2, so we figured Stage 1 is a nice happy medium. We did try the Stage 2 reflash before we pulled the car off of the dyno, and there wasn't much of a gain with our charge pipe kit on, just a few hp of spool up difference. We believe that the charge pipe kit with the additional boost it found put it in near "Stage 2" map territory, but the turbo becomes inefficient at that range so no substantial power was gained. Just a theory though, we will try to back that claim up on our other car we have in the shop soon! I will not post the graphs unless absolutely necessary to avoid confusion in the thread. Can PM, though.

Thank you for doing this comparison. Could you please find a way to include a bone stock base map for refereence?
