Default Mac Web Developers? Need help (badly) with a local MySQL install.. :(

so I downloaded the installer from mysql.com for OS X 10.4 - it's version 4.1.14. go through the installer, check the mysql prefs pane status, says it's running. so i load up cocamysql and try to connect with user root, no pass, on the localhost. Says it's unable to connect, I might not have permissions.

Now here's the kicker - I can login to it with my shortname account on OS X and with the default mysql user provided by OS X - problem is, I can't do ANYTHING with either of these users!

I tried doing grant all command but i need to be in the root user to do that. I tried creating a db under either mysql@localhsot or john@localhost but the privileges for those users don't allow it. So now I'm stuck, and I need this to get going with learning & developing a project for ruby on rails.

Also, this is like my 50th time (at least) today trying to install this crap - all to no avail.

What can I do to get this going? I'm at my wit's end.
