CVT's alright. Not a fan of how bland it is sometimes, but it gets the job done.

All i can say is that with the warmer weather and summer gas back my mpg has been improving with every tank. Last one 35.1 mpg, 70% hwy and ac on for half the time. Speed between 65 and 70.

If we had only known that in real world driving, as reported by forum members, that the CVT would provide highway mileage in excess of 33mpg, we surely would have bought one over the 5 speed... Last edited by Zeeper; 04-29-2013 at 02:41 PM. |

I'm pretty happy with my CVT. It is smooth and great in stop-and-go traffic. Over the past month/3400 miles(70/30, H/C) I've been averaging 33.2 MPG(Ultra-gauge calculated) with my AC on about 80-90 percent of the time. I just hit 37,000 miles last night.

finally crossed 10,000miles and my TripB reset itself:
computer reports: 26MPH, 29.4MPG. Fuelly average, when adjusted for 3.2% odometer error: 28.5MPG (27.6 raw number) this is about 70% city, 30% Highway with the city being suburbia driving and my daily commute to the train station is ~4mi and yields me likely 23mpg for those short horrendous drives. Not bad, although less i had hoped for. i was hoping for about 31MPG in similar conditions when i bought the car (that's what i used to get with my '00 Civic with 5spd). i can't say the mileage has increased appreciably since the early days of the car. i do note a slight decrease in mileage with winter blend gas in CA, and was saved a lot of money/mileage after realizing that leaving the Defrost mode on during winter (when not needed) was killing my fuel economy further since the AC was always on. also: tires routinely set to 33F/31R (i.e., 1 over spec), and oil changed at ~2600 and ~7300mi. we'll see what the next 10k brings. (that's about my annual mileage) |

Just filled up, 29.9 mpg on a 70/30 spilt. No a/c usage, guess I should be happy since that beats the CVT from all the previous posters... Oh wait....

Today's fill, actual 8.0L/100km or 29.401mpg. Not bad considering still on winter gas. All city. Ahh what warmer weather can do for ya. Me likes.

Last tank fill up hand calculated to 32.5 avg. MPG. Also 5 door CVT. Probably could get better numbers, but local driving conditions force "seesawing" the throttle so not much chance for steady-state cruising at any speed.

I agree fully. CVT or 5spd, I would gladly take my CVT over the 5spd. This car is far from a performance car in any shape or form. If I am going to have underated MPG's I would just rather be smooth and relaxed. The CVT does provide that quite well. The Sport Limited CVT actually rivals larger luxury cars I have driven - the rattles.

actually, my wife's 2007 Prius with 110k miles is almost dead quiet with only an occasional rattle. i think i have more rattles in my 2012 Impreza with only 10k miles. :\

i have been pleasantly surprised by her car (especially since i would expect to hear more since it's a quieter car than most with better sound insulation and less engine noise (except under heavy acceleration), and unpleasantly surprised by how many rattles my Impreza has...i have gotten the major ones fixed through perseverance. yet there are still a bunch of intermittent ones coming from the interior of the dash and a few in the hatch area that i can't seem to track down. i've learned to live with the remaining ones as i have run out of time and energy tracking down these last few. but i'll take my rattling Impreza over the Prius any day in terms of driving enjoyment. the only thing i enjoy about driving her car is being able to get great mileage... |

2012 Impreza 2.0i Limited mpg
We've put about 15,000 miles on the car.
Here are the stats: 43 fill-ups Average MPG: 29.7 (as computed by miles divided by gallons. Not by digital trip computer readout) Max MPG: 34.1 Driving is a mix of ~70/30 highway vs. city I'm not sure if anyone else has noticed, but the average MPG readout on the trip computer is consistently a couple of MPG higher than actual as computed by dividing miles by gallons as registered on the gas station pump. I am pretty happy with that performance given that this is an AWD car. Last edited by kutatk; 05-04-2013 at 12:27 PM. |

2012 Impreza 2.0i Limited mpg... just for fun
Further to my above post...
I have a ~5 mile stretch of road from the gas station I normally use to my home. There are are a couple of stop lights and intersections, and a bit of up and down (but relatively flat). Average speed while driving is ~35 MPH. Since I clear the trip computer at the time of fill-up, I always like to see just how high I can get the digital average MPG read out to be by the time I get home. My record... 44.3 MPG! Beat that! |

2012 Impreza 2.0i Limited mpg
Further to my above two posts. Here are some tricks I use to maximize mileage...
I do the obvious stuff like keeping the tires inflated (usually to ~38 psi), gradual accelerations, and using cruise control or equivalent manually controlled constant speed when possible. With the CVT, you have probably noticed that it often automatically changes the gear ratio to create engine compression breaking when you are coasting (it picks a lower gear and revs the engine). This is especially true when coasting down hill. This is an annoying feature and one that Subaru could have done without. I'd much rather decide when to do this myself with the paddles. So, if I am trying to coast to maintain momentum and save fuel and if the CVT auto shifts to a lower gear, I'll use the paddles to pop it back into a higher gear to minimize the compression breaking... thereby maximizing the ability to coast and save fuel. If I know I am going to be on a long steady descent, I'll often shift into manual mode and use the paddles to shift into the highest gear for this same benefit. |

Also, when approaching the bottom of a hill where I know the CVT will "downshift" to higher rpm than 5th, I just pull it into manual (6th if you do it before you hit the hill) and when it starts to slow paddle down to 5th and let it slow going up the hill. It's kind of intuitive, but the lower the gear the lower the mpg. |

So my current tank is shaping up to be about 27-28mpg, been doing a lot of 80-87mph...

on the other hand, most have also found the odometer (when compared with Googlemaps, GPS, and mile markers, is about 3% underestimating the miles traveled. so, in the end, the true mileage is about halfway in between what the computer says and what you calculate if you don't correct for odometer errors. some people have reported having the dealer adjust the computer so it better reflects the actual mileage. i have been thinking of doing that, but i always know in my head that the computer is about 1mpg optimistic when all is accounted for. |
