Default Turning off daytime running lights on 04 WRX?

How do you turn these off? I hate daytime running lights.

i don't know if its the same but on the passengers side just below the black (2) button cover for the ecu sensor & hoses for wastegate and inlet turbo. on that wheelwell theirs a long pizza shaped control sensor & connector in the upright position that says, "warning get hot!" unplug this=cover plugs to prevent contaminants, ziptie plugs back=done. i seen it posted before under scoobymods. take care, jac

Also, it's not a "control sensor". That is merely a ballast resistor. The actual DRL Control Module is up under the dash behind and to the right of the glove box. If you don't unplug the DRL control module itself, you WILL have odd behavior later on when you add aftermarket lights of any kind.

The switch on top of the steering column is for your parking lights. It has nothing to do with the DRLs which operate the low beams at reduced intensity and cannot be turned off except by disconnecting them.
It's important to remember about that switch, however- while its purpose is to allow the parking lights to be left on with the key off (normally they go off with the key), it has been responsible for countless posts to the effect of, "Help, my parking lights won't go off!".

On wrxfanatics.com there is a DIY article on this. Behind the glove box is the DRL module, you can just unplug it and then you have the ability to turn your lights on and off at your leisure.

Here ya go!!!

OK let me try to get this strait. It's ok to simply unplug the DRL resistor unit under the hood and not mess with the DRL module under the dash as long as i'm not planin on adding eny type of aftermarket lights?

Yes, but why would you do that? Unplugging the one under the hood makes it easier to get dirt/gunk in the DRL resistor. Unplug the one in the glove box and call it a day...no worries

A lot of cars have a separate fuse in the fuse box for drl's. i don't know if a WRX does or not, but that might be an even easier solution...

Taking out that fuse would disable the entire light assembly, not just the DRL.

I've had my DRL's turned off by just unpluging the silver resistor part & I have happend to had aftermarket bulbs. Every thing is just fine! I've had it like that for a good 6 months.

Default hand brake switch

Hand brake switch will also turn off the DRL. I wonder if we can use this switch without brake.

Yes you can, but your brake light will always be on, unless you go all the way to the DRL module under the glove box and play with the wires there - at which point unplugging it would be easier.
BTW, everything in this thread has been said and tried many times before, which is why there is info on scoobymods and why searching gets you better results than waiting days for folks to regurgitate the info they read/wrote before.

Where is it located behind the glove box? I have an 04 and have not been able to find this plug. I do see something that resembles its location but the item is red not blue as pictured in that thread.

For the pictures on wrxfanatics, when people say behind the glove box that isn't really exact. If you pull the glove box, you can see the connector.
More like to the right and slightly under your glove box, but obscured by it. On the right side outer wall is where to look.
There are 2 connectors in front of it and one behind. The one behind is the DRL module.
You have an 04 and that picture is from an '02 so the color could be different.
If you see a square relay box next to a round thing, that isn't it, you are looking too low and far forward on the right wall.
The real deal is closer to the frame of the door.
Stick you head in the passenger foot well, look right, then look up and back towards the door.
If you can see 2 relay box like things next to each other and a connector behind them then the connector behind is the one to pull.
It is a bit difficult to get to, but the only easier way involves removing the glove box, which is 9 screws and a pop it and you still won't have much clearance for pulling the plug, you'll just be able to see it better.
Pull the plug, put the key in and turn to ignition(you don't have to start it) release the ebrake and see if your running lights are on.
If off, you are all good, if on, you pulled the wrong connector, no harm done just plug it back in (with the car off).
BTW, there are very few things you can disconnect on the car that could damage it, especially if you don't even start it.
If it is just too difficult, pull the glove box, and maybe even the bracket that holds the 2 relays in front. On one guy's car we had to do just that as the connector wouldn't budge at all.

Ok found it, but it seems like I need to remove the glove box to get to it. I cant seem to fit my hand and get enough leverage to pull it out. Maybe just unplugging it from under the hood is easier?

If you're positive you unplugged the proper module, are you sure your lights arent just turned "on?"

Just remove the glovebox. It should be ridiculously simple. It took < 10 minutes on my 2004 WRX.
There are a couple screws on the bottom of the glovebox. open the glovebox and there should be ~6-8 screws around the edges and the corners. Then a plastic pop tab on the side near the door hinge. Just give that one a quarter turn and then pull it out.
Once the glovebox is removed, you'll have easy access to the DRL unit. it even is labeled "DRL." Unplug it and tuck the loose wire away. Then work your way backwards to put the glovebox back in place.
