Have some questions regarding 2002 wrx cracked cylinder head.
Good day to you all. I am in the process of getting a 2002 WRX Wagon, it has some mods to it currently unknown to me but I don't think it's made serious power, I am getting this car for free but the only caveat is that it has a cracked drivers side cylinder head right by the spark plug.
I think this is a common issue but I'm no mechanic so I honestly have no idea. The questions I have are what else should be done while this is getting repaired? I think the engine has to come out (not entirely sure about this) but while it's out and open should the timing belt/chain be replaced, as well as any sensors, water pump, oil pump etc? Like I stated before, I am no mechanic and I'm sure this work would cost a fortune to have done at a stealorship, so is there anyone local to Malden, MA that is set up to do this work? I have a daily so I am in no rush, this can take as long as it needs to but I'd like it to get done right and of course I will pay, can do cash, beer and pizza, I will lend a hand and I'll be there to grab you tools a cold beer etc if needed. So if someone could provide a list of parts needed to be replaced to future proof this work that would be appreciated, and a vendor to buy said parts from that would be great. I've owned an 04 wrx and an 06 sti so I've been out of the community for a while. thanks for the help. the car is currently in Plaistow, NH and would need to be towed to it's destination to get repaired.

The head technically doesn't *have* to come out to get replaced but it should. There's almost no good, clean way to do it in the car although I have heard of flat rate mechanics doing this.
My advice, in short would be to order an engine gasket set and pull the engine. Remove both heads, have them both checked and decked. (that one side cracked for a reason) replace it if it's really cracked. New timing belt kit.. inspect piston bores, new oil pump, new head bolts. Lots of work. |
