Toyota revives Venza to pad crossover lineup

It is expected to arrive in Toyota dealerships in the U.S. this summer, giving the brand a seventh crossover or SUV when Americans are increasingly shifting out of cars to light trucks.

Toyota is following other automakers — think the Ford Edge, Chevrolet Blazer, Hyundai Santa Fe and Nissan Murano — in fielding a premium, midsize crossover with two rows of seating. The segment expanded 6.4 percent to nearly 950,000 in 2019, making it one of the industry's fastest-growing product categories.

Toyota discontinued the previous Venza crossover wagon after the 2015 model year because of slow sales and a changing market. The 2021 Venza debuted Monday, along with the redesigned 2021 Toyota Sienna minivan, in an online event.

As part of Toyota's strategy to standardize its suite of safety systems, the Venza will come standard with Toyota Safety Sense 2.0, including adaptive dynamic cruise control, lane departure with steering assist, automatic high beams and road sign assist, along with collision avoidance and pedestrian detection.

The Venza is equipped with a 2.5-liter inline-four engine mated to three electric motors, delivering 219 hp. It will ride on 18-inch wheels in lower trims, while the top-end XLE and Limited trims come standard with 19-inch wheels. Cargo capacity behind the second-row seats is slightly smaller than that of the RAV4.

Pricing for the Venza was not announced. When it goes on sale, it will come with a three-year/36,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty and two years of factory scheduled maintenance.

The 2021 Toyota Venza just debuted as an all-new midsize two-row crossover utility vehicle (CUV) that is set to rival the new Chevrolet Blazer and GMC Acadia. The 2021 Toyota Venza is offered exclusively with a hybrid powertrain and all-wheel drive, and is estimated to return a combined 40 mpg in LE trim.

Based on Toyota New Global Architecture K platform, which is used for both crossovers and sedans, the 2021 Toyota Venza offers space for five passengers, and comes with 36.3 cubic-feet of cargo room behind the second row seats.

The crossover is available with a nine-speaker JBL stereo, 12.3-inch touchscreen, seven-inch multi-information display, and 10-inch head-up display. Standard spec includes a six-speaker audio and eight-inch touchscreen.

The 2021 Toyota Venza is also offered with a digital rearview mirror, fixed panoramic glass roof, and heated and ventilated seats. The glass roof feature comes with electrochromatic glass technology, which enables the user to quickly switch between a clear or frosted appearance, as desired.

The new Venza also comes with a wide variety of standard safety features, such as Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Automatic High Beams, Pre-Collision System with Daytime/Low-Light Vehicle and Pedestrian Detection, Lane Tracing Assist, and Road Sign Assist.

Powering the crossover is a hybrid setup that combines a 2.5L four-cylinder internal combustion engine with three electric motors and a lithium-ion battery pack. Combined output for the system is rated at 219 horsepower. The setup also has multiple driving modes, including Normal, Eco, and Sport, to customize the driving experience. There’s even an EV mode that runs on electric power only, which is useful for short distances.

Power is applied to the pavement though an electronic AWD system with a rear-mounted electric motor that provides up to 80 percent of driving force to the rear wheels. Speaking of which, 18-inch wheels are equipped as standard, while 19-inchers are equipped higher in the range.

The 2021 Toyota Venza is estimated to start at $34,000, and arrives in dealers this summer.

Funny enough I was looking at Japanese Toyotas and this is actually the successor the 10 year old RX350, which used to be the Toyota Harrier, until the Harrier and RX series split. So now we get the JDM upscale Toyota SUV.

Venza means toilet seat in Japan. Well, I think spelled benza, but close enough.

Just say it with a Spanish accent and you're covered.

Looks like the old Lexus RX from the side profile, which is a good thing. I like that front bumper design.

I mean it looks WAY better than the old Venza, so that's a start.

Not sure I would say "way" better as this new version looks pretty generic and dated on arrival.

When I worked for Toyota these weren't bad vehicles. However, they never marketed them. People would ask when did this vehicle come out?! Then slowly reply that they started production in 2009.

Default 2021 Toyota Venza Pricing Makes Lexus NX Look Like A Bargain

2021 Toyota Venza Pricing Makes Lexus NX Look Like A Bargain

Quote:
This could differ in some parts of the country.

After a six-year absence, the Toyota Venza crossover has returned to the market earning rave reviews. Although it's based on the hot-selling Toyota RAV4, the reborn Venza has its own distinct personality thanks to its overall more premium packaging. It could even be passed off as a Lexus, save for the badging, something that Toyota has seemingly taken note of when it comes to lease pricing.

CarsDirect noticed something a bit troubling with Southern California Venza leases; they're pretty expensive. In fact, the numbers aren't much less than a new Lexus NX. For example, a new 2021 Venza is currently being advertised in that region at $399 a month for 36 months with $1,999 due up front and a 12,000-mile yearly limit. Toyota calculated these numbers based on an MSRP of $33,914.

Factor in the down payment and customers are really paying $455 per month. If this sounds like a lot of money then you're right. A Lexus NX lease offer is proof. Right now, one could alternatively opt for a 2021 NX 300h at $389 a month for 36 months and $2,999 due on day one. Now, here's where things get strange. The Lexus NX's lease price is based on an MSRP of $45,405, a nearly $11,500 difference over the Venza, and yet the NX's effective monthly lease cost is only $17 more.

What's going here? It appears the answer has to do with interest rates. The NX has a much lower interest rate of just 0.3 percent while the Venza is 4 percent.

There's also a bigger discount of $1,250 compared to $500 for the Venza. As part of its annual 'December to Remember' sales event, Lexus is also giving customers an additional lease payment worth up to $700. There is, of course, a couple of downsides to the NX offer.

First off, there's a 10,000-mile year cap instead of the Venza's 12,000 miles, and, of course, the Venza is all-new while the NX dates back to 2014. But as noted above, be sure to check Venza pricing in your region because this may not be a nationwide offer. Southern California residents should also know this offer is good through November 30.

I like that it has the Lexus cues, but at that price I'd just pay a little more and get the proper Lexus.
