Default I want to hear the turbo- whining about whine

My first car was an '89 Merkur XR4Ti. When I got it in '95 it was considered a nice, sorta fast car and only had 28k mi. I drove the crap out of it. I loved the loud turbo whine. I am older an more repsonsible now but I want my Saabaru to have that turbo whine, I can rarely hear the turbo. I like it and it's kind of an auditory boost gauge.
How do I go about getting it?

The whine yer talking about is through the air inlet more then anything.

You can do the snorkel delete in teh front right fender. That'll make it louder, you can also get a short ram or cold air intake, as those will make that sound more noticable for you.

I was thinking of going from stock directly to stage 2 anyway. What's the install time for a DP? I can't find a post on this. The difficulty level of the install will be the tie breaker for this.

If all u want is the whine the downpipe doesn't affect that sound don't listen to those guys. Get an intake and if u want to go to stage 2 downpipe is pretty easy as long as u have the right tools and have a good idea of where all the bolts are. Get a frend to help u out and it should take no more than 2 hours.

downpipe is pretty easy as long as you don't get stuck trying to take out a cross threaded O2 sensor.

FWIW, I did my turboback in <45min jacking the car to turning the key.

Sorry but that's definitely not correct.. i've had both cai and the turboxs downpipe on at separate times...

CAI or snorkel-delete etc lets you hear the air rushing around pre-turbo a bit more and the blow-off valve sound... but the downpipe (especially turboxs from what I hear - and this is the one I have) will let you hear the TURBO. Sounds like a rocket when boosting and whistles pretty good when you let off... pretty cool imho.

Oh, so then i'm lying to him..

imo, intakes let you hear the sucking sound of air moving, a dp, or at least from my personal experience, the txs 4" dp will give you that whiny turbine sound...

My exhaust took a long time, but I removed the IC, broke one of the bolts for the donut gasket, and had a bunch of other little hangups... It shouldn't take more than 2 hours, but don't make any plans...

the stock bolts get corroded over time so it's almost worth buying new bolts EXPECTING them to break.. then you can just snap em and get on with it.

GP moto intake silencer delete and the downpipe together make for a beauty of a whine. First I did the intake silencer delete and could only here the turbo a tiny bit, but now with the downpipe its great.

Nothing you do will make the turbo itself all that audible. Louder than stock, sure -- but still very quiet IMO. What's much easier to do is to make the BPV louder. It starts to bypass air at any kind of boost and will hiss pretty loudly until you go all the way WOT. When you uncork the intake (i.e. remove the silencer), you can really hear it. Loudest is if you put on a short ram, like the K&N Typhoon.

here's my experience....

my downpipe didnt do anything for turbo 'whine'. my 3" TBE with RSR catback didnt do anything for turbo 'whine'. (my exhaust is totally fricken loud though)

My short ram intake made a huge difference in turbo noise. right before the vacuum/boost changeover...it whines pretty good. in the higher gears and very low boost...it whines a bunch too.

again, this is my experience.

same with me, whines the loudest around 3k if your running stock turbo

about 4500 with a gt35r but the whine sounds like super vtec, very aggressive with open downpipe

oh sorry I thought that is what he meant. Yes the downpipe will open up more air for turbo allowing more boost therefore making the whine louder.

I also have had a XR4TI as well as a WRX before the STI I'm driving now. I think a good portion of the responders to this thread are missing your question or don't understand the way turbo cars make noise. When the man said turbo whine he's talking about the suttle high frequency noice you get with small (or large) throttle changes and the corosponding turbo rpm change that occurs and most readily heard when your next to large diesel truck (big turbo) on a hill. The Garret T3 on XR4TI's is a pretty loud (good!) turbo and for the STI your going to have to upgrade the turbo, or attempt to take away some of the sound deadening that exists on you stock set up ie; heat shielded catted down pipe. With the removal of that you will get a slight increase in actual turbo noise and not air rushing in to the intake.

CW4, you are correct, that's what I was referring to.
I guess the Garrett was just a loud turbo. it is not important enough to do any major mods. I'm going conservative and limiting it to the AP and Cobb DP.
