The biggest thing I notice driving around in my WRX compared to my old GTI
Hey all,
My last two cars were GTIs, an '08, and a '10. I don't drive much, between the two cars I put less than 50k miles on them in 6 years. So I never really had the reliability issues people complain about. It's damn nice not to have FWD any more. Especially FWD without an LSD. Once you're stage 2 on these cars they are really kinda annoying the way they fight to put power down and light up a wheel in hard cornering. Anyways, the one really nice thing about driving around in the GTIs is that no one seemed to f--k with me on the freeway and try to race me. I'm going on a couple weeks with my WRX hatch now. It's everything I wanted my turboed '98 2.5RS to be with the hatch practicality of my GTIs. Love the car, it's awesome. However it seems to attract douchebags in various JDM cars, to mistake my generally brisk and purposeful driving as somone that wants to play. One time it was a ridiculously fast EVO blowing by me at what was probably 120mph and kept on pulling away. It was kinda sick actually, but WTF he could have done that a lane over and not cut it so close. The really head scratcher is Scion TCs. These guys crack me up, I never really noticed drivers of these cars, but at least where I work around the East LA area, this seems to be the car of choice for douchebags that want a fast car and couldn't afford one or something. I've already encountered four that have either caught up with me in traffic and then cut me off and then gone swerving in and out of traffic in an extremely reckless fashion, or once passing them follow and tailgate me waiting for me to take the bait before giving up and speeding off. There's no doubt some people have taken that 165hp, 3600lb turkey and wasted their money giving it some serious power, but these cars were basically stock save tint and rims, intakes and fart cans. Have any of you noticed stuff like this? I can't figure out if they really want to race or just want to see a car quicker than theirs check out on them and enjoy the show. It kinda cracks me up, but the reckless driving by guys that don't seem to have much skill and drive cars that are unperformance kinda have me concerned for others that are just trying to get where they are going.

I'm curious if this is a California thing. I get a lot of mustangs and raised trucks posturing to race (and of course every obnoxious Honda out there). Other wrx owners tend to just smile and wave.

I had quite the opposite issue when I owned my Accord. It was a relatively stock car. I/H/E and tokico coilovers. Not too low and quiet. Tint and blackhoused headlights. I had prelude wheel on it too. In reality, it's not an agressive car at all, but I would get picked on and glared at by just about anything modified on the road.
On the flip side, I got my 99 RS and it's still not a quick car by any means, it's completely stock other than blackhoused headlights and UEL headers. I have not received any flack from anyone, and usually get waves and nods from other drivers. I think you may just have an unusually high amount of douche bags in your area. |

I've had my STi for almost 8 years now. From my perspective, it. never. stops.

Other WRX owners are way cool. Lost of waves and thumbs ups, etc. Yup I'm a pre-WRX in the US explosion member. Met Alex who originally started the site at the 2nd annual members meeting at SEMA in Las Vegas. Quote:
I wasn't comparing cars themselves, but you're right about that. Quote:

Ever since I put my front mount on I get Hondas flying up next to me sitting at almost redline waiting for me to race. I gave in once, did a little pull expecting it to Be a turbo civic because he seemed pretty persistent and he tried drafting me as I pulled away with barely any boost lol.
Surprisingly though I get alot of duramaxs and power strokes blowing by me as I cruise down the road. They try to blow smoke like its going out of style. |

I've had the same experience with the scion tc's. It was funny at first but got old pretty quickly.
There's a guy who lives near me who drives a tc... He's blown by me on the highway at 90+ mph, then gotten in front of me and slowed to under the speed limit. It's happened a few times now. |

I only get Hondas that mess with me. Probably because there are so many in these parts. Once in a while a Mustang/Challenger.

I don't have anyone who wants to race me. I guess my car blends in.

Tell me about it...
I commute daily from Temecula down I-15 to Rancho Bernardo for work. It's one ricer fly-by after another...gets old real fast. Usual suspects: Civics, Corolla S, Mazda 3's, Scion TC's, Scion Xb's(really???), Altima's, Maxima's, Vw's, Eclipse's, Tiburons... yadda yadda yadda. You get the picture.
The thing is 95% of the time I'm in the #2 or 3 lanes doing 71-73 mph(limit's 70 for the majority of my trip) and giving zero indication that I wanna play but these knuckleheads see the Rex and immediately feel the need to show me who's boss. Not even worth my gas... |

Lots of Hondas, and lots of the aforementioned turbo diesel trucks blowing clouds of black. I guess being so near the tourist trap of Pigeon Forge and all the Rod Run events, people around here always seem to look across to see what is sitting next to them at a light. If the other person looks, it's a race. If the other person doesn't look....hell that's a race too.
This is why I opt for the back roads on my commute as much as I can. try to keep the driving record clean... |

Exactly. The Altimas I can respect a tiny bit more, they have a little bit of get up and go but the Corollas just make me laugh. Shoo fly, dont bother me...

That's odd, I never get anyone trying any of that crap. I do however get tons of those douchebag diesel trucks blowing by me, but then again they're everywhere where I live and drive like ******** regardless of what you're driving.

I've had some dillrod Scion drivers rev at me. I just look over and laugh and wave them away. Maybe helps I'm in my 40's cause when I was into VW's I had everyone trying to race me. I was in my 20's then and they typically lost. I don't mess around on the street anymore, not worth the risk of hurting innocent people.
Although there are times I'd love to drop the hammer on some of those Scions, I do refrain. |

I'm glad there's no one who drives like that around here. There's a bunch of idiots who drive 'merican trucks with the entire Walmart auto accessory section stuck on the outside, but they're too stupid to cause much harm.

I'm going to second the guy up there that mentioned the key/key fob combo. A definite downgrade from the switchblade for my old '10 GTI.
I have also noticed a bunch of those douchebag gigantic diesel trucks blow past me. I'm still in my break-in period guys, gimme a break here! |

You guys really need to build up your personal resistance to peer pressure.
And I'm not saying that to be insulting. As you get older there's a whole lot of **** you get from other people in this world, and letting someone's challenge to race you slide off with negligible effect is just the beginning. |
