Default Every "How To" RallySport has done in one place!

We have done a few installation how to's on a few past project cars for the community to enjoy. We here at RallySport Direct thought it would be a great idea to have a place where you can quickly and easily find the installation that helps you! Here you will find most installations that we have performed, and we will keep this thread current with every new installation in the future. For further information about any of the products installed, you can just click on any of the respective images below.

Thanks to our staff members Kirill C, Corby Lines, as well as Rick C, for putting forth their time and effort.

1. Let's start out with the Prova Steering wheel for the 08+ WRX STI:

2. Next, this is the Kartboy Short Shifter for the 08+ WRX STI:

3. The Prova Air oil Separator on our 2011 STI:

2015 WRX Oil Change.

The sweet little WRX is all broken in and it’s time for its first mod, and what is that you ask? And oil change! Okay, not exactly a modification, but it excites me all the same as this is our first step before we start the real modifications.

Those with a BRZ/FR-S will be very familiar with changing the WRX’s oil, and really this is one of the easiest oil changes I have ever done. Let’s get started!

What we used:
5.4 Quarts of Penrite Racing 5W30 oil
Prova Oil Filter
Dimple Magnetic Drain Plug M16x1.5x12
Note* if re-using your factory drain plug, make sure to pick up a new crush gasket for it

Tools needed:
14mm wrench
15mm wrench (required for new Dimple Drain Plug)
Oil Filter Wrench (not usually required, but someone at the factory ate their Wheaties that morning)
Clean Funnel
A few rags or paper towels

First I like to remove the oil fill cap, this helps the oil drain a bit quicker when you remove the drain plug.

Now get under the car, and get your 14mm wrench, you will see the drain plug exposed at the bottom of the pan, horray for nothing covering the drain plug!

Place your oil drop pan/catch under the drain plug and you will need to use a bit of force to remove the drain plug as it seems like Subaru paints over these and employs He-Man to torque these down.

Let all of the oil drain, clean the drain plug, apply the new crush gasket and thread it back into the oil pan. Don’t quote me on this yet, but the Torque specs should be 28.9 ft-lb for the oil drain plug. We used the Dimple drain plug, which required a 15mm wrench.

Now we move to the top of the engine. You will see the oil filter is incredibly easy to get to. We had to use a filter wrench to remove it, but normally you can get these off by hand. Once removed, I like to clean up any oil on the top of the oil cooler.

Make sure to lubricate the O-ring on the new filter, once done we can install the new filter with a toque spec of 10.3 ft-lb, but I always go off the German standard “GuttenTight” which is roughly hand tight plus about ¼ turn.

Use a clean funnel and pour in 5.4 quarts of oil. Put on the oil cap, start up the car, and make sure the oil light on the dash turns off. Get out of the car and visibly check for any leaks. Shut down the car, and check the dipstick to make sure the oil level is correct. Is it? Yay!

You've just completed your first oil change on your new WRX. Not only will your friends be impressed, but the car will now have more respect for you as well. Now go enjoy the car with a nice drive!

Thanks,
Rick

2015 STi Oil Change

The Sti has just been itching to be broken in.. well okay that’s not true, but we have been itching to get the STi all broken in. We just want to be able to go have some real fun with it, so we are excited to say that it is 100% broken in, and the first order of business is an oil change, so let’s get started.

Tools needed:
17mm wrench
12mm socket
Flat head screwdriver for plastic clips
Oil Filter Wrench (why are these factory filters on so tight!?)
Clean Funnel
A few rags or paper towels

What we used:
4.5 Quarts of Penrite Racing 5W30 oil
Prova Oil Filter
Dimple Magnetic Drain Plug M20X1.5X14
Note* if re-using your factory drain plug, make sure to pick up a new crush gasket for it

First thing we like to do is remove the oil fill cap, it seems to make draining the oil quicker and also less messy. Once done, get under your car, as we will have to remove the factory under panel. There are 6 plastic push clips total (3 on each upper side of the panel), 2 large clips, and 3 x 12mm bolts holding on the under panel.

You can see the 3 side panel clips here. Remember there are 3 on each side.

And the large clips on the rear of the panel will pull out.

With the under panel off, we now have access to the oil filter, and this will also make draining the oil easier as well. Use your 17mm wrench to break the oil drain plug loose, and make sure to place your oil catch pan under the drain plug and let er’ loose.

Once the oil is drained, insert the drain plug back in and torque to spec, which should be 33 ft-Lb’s.

Now we can move onto the oil filter. The stock filter was on incredibly tight, so we had to use an oil filter wrench to remove it.

With the filter off, we like to clean up any residual oil left on the bottom of the oil cooler.

Fill the new filter with oil, and use the oil to lube up the O-ring before installation.

Install the new oil filter, Subaru lists the torque at 10.7 ft-lbs, but we usually just go hand tight plus about ¼ of a turn extra.

Reinstall the under panel in reverse order. It may be helpful to have a buddy to help you hold the panel up while you get the first few bolts or clips in.

Now use your funnel and put in the rest of the 4.5 Quarts. Double check the dipstick to make sure oil is showing, put on the oil cap, and start the car. Look for the oil light and make sure it turns off, let the car idle while you visibly check for any leaks. If no leaks present, shut off the car and let it sit for a minute, check the oil dip stick and add any oil if needed.

If everything looks good, give yourself a huge high five and make sure you do a victory dance as you just successfully did your own first oil change on your 2015 STi.

Last and most important step, go for a drive and enjoy your car!

Thanks,
Rick
