Default Going to check out a used 2000RS tomorrow. What should I look for when inspecting it

The car is a 2000 with <40,000 miles. Anything in particular I should keep an eye out for when checking it out? thanks

make sure its got a engine

ok well look for rust, scrapes dents da da da. listen to the engine for knocking and other bad sounds. Look for oil on the engine, and in the ground as sign of leaks. If test driving feal out the transmissions, especially if standard.

Check under the oil filler cap for any signs of sludge buildup also.

look for corrosion around the engine (from salt) and don't forget to kick the tire.

Ya oil filter. Note if you see a white ish sort of pasty cream stuff there DON'T buy. Head gaskets need to be done. The coolant and the oil are mixing some ware.

Also look at the muffler, look for holes and rust on it. Basically the idea is look at items that do go over time and see if they are gone now or ready to go. I don't mean brakes, and ware items but things like the muffler that usually gets replaced over the life of the car.

Look on the top of the block where the head meets it (HG). The SOHC engines blow the HG's outward and often seep onto the deck prior to fully blowing. Regardless, I personally wouldn't make that a deal breaker. At 40K mi, it is still under the WP99 service notice warranty that was issued because of the head gasket problems...

+2 on the head gaskets... MY99 has weaping HG and i don't see anything from the top, nothing on the ground, but if you look under near the exhaust ports, it's easy enough to spot.... wait i think i ahas a pic...

Please pardon her condition, she's lived a HARD salt filled life...

as long as it never lived in Newfoundland then its all good. I am from newfoundland and its known as the rustest place in the world.

We (family) had a pontiac 6000, great car in all honesty in its time, especially as a family car. 3.1 L engine was bullet proof (same engine basiclay as my 1994 olds acheave, and again bullet proof). I was just getitng licence and we where working on the car doing rust work to realize the 1/2 chassey these things had was for all intensive purposes missing. Rusted away. Got rid of it soon after lol

so car location has somthing to do with it to.

When I bought my car, I was told that this whiteish cream can also be found on the underside of the coolant cap. So I would check that as well.

Don't forget the overflow tank too...

Bring a OBD2 scanner if you have one... Just in case there's CEL while running...

And < 40k miles?.... If the exterior/interior condition doesn't match the mileage... or the floor mat has a nicely 'worn' look to it... or tires look older... most likely the instrument panel has been replaced...
Something that can be done < 10 minutes...

Average mileage ~80k.... Why car so low mileage? multiple to choose from on a daily basis?

My family usually takes a prospective car to a dealership for a full inspection (last step before initiating payment). The dealership should note if the HG is good or not, wheel bearings, muffler condition, etc. And be fair about it, pay for the inspection yourself. You can get the seller to knock off the price of the inspection if you end up buying it, and the seller doesn't feel like they get ripped if you don't.

Take the car for a test drive and get it up to 50-55mph. Your listening for a out of round sound, like a repeating throbbing sound. If you hear something then start swaying the car side to side and listen to see if the sound increases and then decreases. What you're doing is loading and unloading the bearings side to side to help determine which side has the bad bearing. If the sound increases when you start decelerating then the bad bearing is in the front. If you hear the sound, but it doesn't change w/ loading the bearings then it is tire noise.

the car was a "dingie" it was towed behind a motorhome and rarely driven. Not to mention the guy had like 12 other cars to choose from(mostly old ones) including 6 brats. He had an 86 brat with 38,xxx miles on it!

Well I checked out the car the other day and it looked great. Aside from a large dent on the hood from when he took took tight of a turn with the motorhome while towing the RS, we loved it. It looks like my girlfriend will be buying it once we have time to meet him again.

Then I asked about the headgasket problem he says there were 2 different problems, some engines had an internal leak and others had the external leak. he said his car is the one that is supposed to have the external leak. So should we go ahead and take it to a dealership for the headgasket fix? Or wait later down the road when/if we have problems with it?
