Default Parking Brake and Battery light come on as I drive

My parking brake and battery lights are flashing/stays on together as I drive. Doesn't really matter what I'm doing at the moment, it's almost seems random. I can just cruise along the freeway at 70 or sit at a stop light and then it flickers, some times it stays on for 30secs. I had my alternator checked at a local shop and they say its well within spec. Also replaced my battery about 6 months ago. Any ideas?

Odd...
As for the brake light, check your brake fluid & pads.

Battery light- Would lead me to think low battery under 13.0

You're alternator is toast. Both lights are tied into the alternator's charging system.

How thoroughly did they check the alternator? It is possible to have bad diodes and still see the proper voltage when checking with a meter, but the output will be "dirty" and will cause problems such as the intermittent warning lights you are seeing. For a full alternator check/diagnosis a scope should be used.

^me too. The battery and brake warning light are wired together - the brake light is just a side effect. Your alternator is probably dieing. I just replaced my alternator with a rebuilt one that I had tested at Autozone and came back good, and my voltage is low and those indicators are flickering. I did notice that the wiring harness that plugs into the voltage regulator (3-pin plug on back of alternator) is corroded, so I'm wondering if that's the problem.

many rebuilt subaru alternators are garbage....it is a real crapshoot as to the rebuilt alternator being better than the one you are taking out

I had the new alt bench tested before installing and it passed. It's from a place with a good rep - Maniac Electric Motors, and has a 2-year warranty. Gonna do some more diagnosing today and order a new harness; even if that's not the cause, I want to replace my corroded one.

BTW - also bench tested my old alt on the same machine and it failed.

Figured it out. Engine wasn't grounded. There's a ground wire behind the intercooler, next to the pitch stop mount, that connects the firewall to the transmission. I guess that's the main engine ground? I'll have to search on that. On mine, the wire had pulled loose from the terminal on the firewall side, so it had a really crappy connection. Maybe that's what killed my old alternator too. Or maybe there's another ground somewhere that melted when my alt died...
