Question brake and battery light on with AC?

Im not sure what is going on but when i turn on the AC the brake and battery light start flashing. i dont know if that would have anything to do with a low oil level or alternator or belts or what? any help, suggestions?i have 75000 miles and the CEL was already on before. and so was the airbag light...oh and my apex turbo timer says that there are about 11.8 volts (i think its volts)left in the battery and its a optima red top.
thanks
Andy

The load from the AC is dropping the voltage too low, either because the alternator is shot, belt is slipping, battery is weak etc.
What is the voltage at idle with no load? It should be about 13.5-14.5 if the alternator is charging normally. You should be able to turn on some accessories without it dropping (it will dip and come back up as the alternator takes the load). The WRX alternator does have marginal capacity at idle and if enough things are running (AC, lights, defrost etc.) the voltage will drop down to battery voltage and even below.
Check the connections to your battery, and if possible have the battery load tested to be sure it is ok. Have the alternator checked as well to see if it is charging at its full capacity.

This is happening to me this morning. Both brake and battery light are on, but I noticed they go off when the engine is revved higher than 3K rpms. However, everytime the rpms goe below 2800, both lights come back on. Any suggestions? I did not have any problem starting the car or breaking this morning on my commute, and when I got to work, I shut off and was able to start again without incident. What should I do?

BTW: No AC was used, just the fan on "2" and radio. Turned them off when I first noticed the problem, but still no change (lights still on).

Thanks

John

Check the voltage as mentioned above. It sounds like your alternator is on the way out.

Quick update:

Took it to the shop ASAP. At first they couldn't replicate the lights on a test drive, but after checking the brakes, they determined they needed to be replaced (new pads and resurfaced rotors). Not bad considering they were the originals (56K miles later ). As far as why the break light was going on and off with the battery light, we still didn't get an answer on that.

As for the battery light, when the mechanic took the car out to test the new breaks, he was able to replicate the battery light problem (bouncing off 3K rpms). Thankfully they tested the alternator again, and now noticed it wasn't holding a charge at all.

Subaru replaced the alternator under my GOLD plan extended warranty.

ALL IS GOOD!
