Well, do you mean a Vulcan? Or perhaps a Phalanx (but those are on ships).

The A-10 Warthog has a badass gun that shoots depleted uranium fast enough that continuous firing would stall the aircraft in mid-air.

the M61A1 20mm Gatling gun, and the GAU-12/U 25mm Gatling gun are on the AC-130 gunship.

lol i remember watching a show on that. That tank buster is nasty.

I think they were quoted as saying something to the effect of " Here's this kick ass gun - now build a plane around it. "

Maybe if you said which bomber you'd get a better answer. It's like asking whats the name of the round black things on the side of cars. Many bombers, many diffrent types of guns.

Most American bombers of WW2 vintage carried Browning M2 .50 caliber machine guns.

In fact, after about mid-1940 (the advent of the B17E) the only machine-gun carried by American bombers and fighters was the M2 .50. A specialied variant of the B25 medium bomber carried 10-12 of them (2 in "blisters" on each side below the cockpit and 6-8 mounted in the nose itself) pointing forward. A 5-10 second burst was enough to cut a destroyer in half. And a few of them were further modified to carry a 75mm light artillery piece And only a few American planes carried the kind of 20mm cannon which were widely used by other nations. The B29 carried these in several of its gun stations.

And the position was, indeed, usually referred to as waist gunner. If there was a turret on the top of the plane, that was the ventral station. A turret below (often spherical) was a dorsal turret.

As stated in the "what useless **** do you know" thread, I know a good deal about military history.

It will slow it down, but not enough for a stall. I have worked with many A-10 pilots over the years and they said it does slow the plane a little. They use quick burst most of the time in combat.

It's the Vulcan, but it's not mounted on a bomber - it's a C130.

From what I have been told they have mounted Howitzers on planes as well to provide ground protection for transportation convoys.

I forget the name of the plane, but I was told its the size of an airliner and itll fy along above the transportation convoys and just take people out.

I got this all from one of my fraternity brothers who came back last weekend for a 2 week leave before he had to go back over.

Don't they only have 18 seconds of ammo and if they fired it all continuously it would melt the barrel?

It's called the AC-130 Spectre

armament:
two M61 20mm Vulcan cannons with 3,000 rounds
one L60 40mm Bofors cannon with 256 rounds
one M102 105mm howitzer with 100 rounds

I have a 105 shell casing that I got when I worked with the AC-130 people in Africa in '93, they would sweep the brass out the back every night. They always said they never fired at anything.

There was a video clip of an AC-130 doing it's thing back in Afghanistan (from the gunners point of view) - those things are evil wouldn't want to be on the business end of one of those!

there are 2 different types of ac-130 gunships. there is a h-model (40mm & 105mm) and U-model (25mm, 40mm, and 105mm). there is a plan right now to get rid of the 25mm and 40mm guns on both models and put in 30mm guns. that won't be till end of '05 start of '06.

Actually during initial testing, exhaust gases from the gun stalled one or both of the engines and one of the test planes was lost. That necessitated a complete redesign of the front end of the airplane and how it diverted the exhaust from the gun.
