Doing an EJ20 swap on my L, help needed!
I just called a shop to have the swap done, and they asked wether or not my front clip was usdm or jdm..... The usdm front clips are very expensive, and the jdm ones are more affordable. Anyway, the labor was 4200 minimum!!!!!!! That is expensive as it is, and they say the jdm right hand is a harder swap! How hard is this swap into a 5 speed 1995 L anyhow? Can anyone else do the jdm swap cheaper? I just want the motor into my car, that is all!
Thanks

I'm pretty sure that some shopw like East Coast Swappers can get the swap done for just over $5000. This includes the engine and labour.

Duh... RHD swaps are always more labor / parts. Anyways, here's the short list of items to be swapped:
Crossmember Engine (including full exhaust, turbo, etc) Transmission Clutch, slave cylinder and master cylinder Rear differential? Hood and paint (gotta have the scoop!) Power streering fittings Fuel pump Rear hubs (if you're going with disc brakes in the rear) and brakes Then there's the wiring / ECU, etc. which is probably half the labor. Wiring is an SOB. |

So, for 5k they can give me an engine, and put it in? WOW lol.....
The RHD looks tough, they are emailing me an out the door price.... For 100 more, or even possibly less in the end, the USDM swap looks good.... I just dont want to pay 8k.... |

Heh... I'm $12k into my swap (and I haven't even bought a transmission.) Its nothing like what you're going to do, however. I'd guess that it'll cost you more than $5k in the end...
Most of the stuff that I mentioned have to be done regardless of engine choice. My car had a cable clutch and so all of the clutch stuff had to be swapped. That sort of stuff will come back and bite you... just be prepared. My car was down for 4 months... some issues beyond my control causing that, but don't expect it to be a one week job either. |

I planned and researched my swap extensivly before I did anything. I did a complete WRX swap for less than $2300 in less than a week. If you plan it out and aren't trying an H6 swap (awesome sweet project BTW adhowe) it will cost you less and not take much time.

speedy's advice is sage. Plan and research everything. Research the specific parts you're going to use and what compatibility issues there might be. This lets plan what you want to junkyard and what you want to buy new. Once the car is torn apart, taking the time to junkyard parts doesn't happen... you just blow the money on new parts because its faster.
As swaps go, I think the WRX swap is an easy one. Its well documented. But, you need to pay attention to certain issues when swapping into an older chassis... some stuff that is plug and play in the '97+ cars is not in the '93-'96 models. |
