My source is me. I picked it up. It was retarded. I was willing to put something I didn't need, on my car because it looks INSANE. But not at the cost of easily trippling the weight of the brakes that were there.

I am taking a bit of a guess on this, but I would be surprised if it didn't weigh double the stock STI front brake setup. And again, 99.999% of people, already are incapable of making use of the full potential of the stock STI calipers/rotors. (leaving out ham fisted driving that can fade brakes in a parking lot) Sure, ok you are one of the .0001% that could make use of it, but you HAVE to know (I am sure you do) that you are in the incredibly small minority on nasioc. So what applies to you far from applies to everyone (not everything, but certain points of this)

As for the rest, we could sit and pointlessly argue back and forth, but in the end, none of that really has much to do with the entire reason this thread exists. Which is street cars, on the street, someone pulls out in front of you or light changes and you have to stop FAST. In which case, nothing but tires will help you.

Seriously that sums it up.

I've weighed similar setups and the weight difference was negligible. I agree though on price, unless you have a competition track car or money to burn.......no need.

Are you talking about the stock brembo vs the F50 BBK? If so I already posted the weights and it's less than 1/2lb more. Double the weight would make the F50 caliper 16lbs, it's less than 9.

Stock brembo VS the Gran Turismo kit
http://www.buybrakes.com/brembo/gran-turismo.html

That one. It was just like the pictured one but one piece cast rotors. It was ridiculously heavy.

I mean it was a while between when I picked up the stock brembos and that kit, but the stock brembos never made me go WHAT IN THE HOLY HELL??? when I picked them up, weight wise.

I have those exact brakes. The difference in weight is about 1/2lb.

Really common sense! iIve seen a lot of guys on here, that talk the talk, and really don't know $hit. I agree with you completely. These fancy brakes are made for track or off track, for prolonged hard use. Good post.

You sir, have made my day with this line. Having started racing a little over a year ago in novice, beginner leagues and building cars using trial and error, errors resulting in a spray of grass and mud off the track, i can not agree more. Weight reduction/placement and not skimping ($$$$) on tires is the best you can do. Of course in a racing application you want to upgrade pads and fluid etc, but again, it helps reduce fading, not actual stopping distance.

I'm brand new here, and I'm glad I did read this.

I bought a 2013 STI a few weeks ago, and even from the test drive, the one thing I was unhappy with is the braking. I was about to start looking at what brake upgrades people have been doing.

I'm a bit spoiled. The brakes on my 370Z are a bit bigger, and I have considerably more tire patch in the Z, so it ought to brake better.

After reading this, I feel pretty good about what the STI can do. I'll just have to put wider/stickier rubber on it if I want it to brake faster.

And I must be in the 1% who does drive the twisties and take my cars to race tracks.

Still, great thread.

I am so glad I stumbled upon this thread. The OP makes 100% sense and I also tell most of my friends/family the same thing. A lot of people don't understand that "race setup" braking systems need to be consistently WARM to produce hard braking/cornering effects.

There are 2 things your 370 has going for it. And possibly 3.

1. Wider rubber. (I don't know if its stickier/as sticky, but its probably close to the same) =more traction=more ability to slow down without locking up.

2. Chassis balance. Better balanced car=more even weight on the front AND rear tires=they can grab harder without locking up. The STI is very nose heavy, so the rear gets REALLY light when braking, so the tires lock up pretty easy=the ABS has to come on earlier in the rear= lowers the amount of braking that can be done.

and POSSIBLY a 3rd. I don't know what your 370Z weighs, but I am betting its lighter than the STI. Lighter cars can stop quicker than heavier ones.

I get what you're saying, but I think this is what people like, and are defending, about their upgraded brakes. But yea, I know what you're saying.

Z's are pig heavy. My son's looking at a car for him to upgrade to from his CRX because his grades have been great. He has been giving me the numbers and until he noticed the weight, was impressed with the Z. The thing going for the Z is that there are "bricks" all over the car. Like 100 pounds worth. But still pig heavy. But to me, anything over 2700 pounds is pig heavy.

Excellent source of information for those looking at upgrading their brakes.
Like always look after and maintain your car, check regularly for wear and damage. The factory gives you a very well rounded and safe vehicle. That being said please don’t hurt yourself, your friends, or your car by assuming your factory brakes (what ever they may be) can handle the same abuse that a suitable and tailored brake kit can handle. I have lived in the mountains and seen people push their brakes, whether it be rushing home for the holidays up windy roads or cars/trucks towing trailers, and running into braking problems due to over heating. This sort of driving can easily warp thin rotors, especially the rears in the popular Nissan s chassis, or crack the brake pads in severe cases.

Please be safe. Thanks.

Coming from driving cars not equipped with abs that is scary that the rears lock up before the fronts. I haven't read the whole sticky so feel free to flame but do guys consider running a "stickier" compound in the front so they don't have that happen. I guess you could run an adjustable prop. Valve but the easiest and most cost effective would be to play with pad compounds.

on my car I have dba rotors, ss lines, dot4, with hawk hps pads. still have the stock calipers. I did that due to massive brake fade. you really dont need to dump a ton of money in brakes. just my 2 cents
