Smile Have You Heard of the Starlite Rally?

It was an annual pilgrimage for car freaks from coast to coast. The Starlite Rally was a truly legendary event. Over a hundred cars blasting through the night over two lane back roads from Santa Barbara to Las Vegas. Once in a while you get a chance to relive history. Once again you can experience the excitement of driving into the parking lot full of exotic cars and knowing that for one night of your life, you’ll be testing your skill against theirs’ on wide open roads. Experience the thrill of competing with top notch rally teams. For twelve hours, you’ll be making memories that will live for a lifetime.

The Santa Barbara Sports Car Club put on the Starlite Rally every December from 1971 to 2000. It was not a technically difficult event. It was just an excuse to drive to Vegas for fun going over the best roads in the world. You didn’t need compasses or protractors or elaborate timing equipment. You didn’t need to follow boring “Left at T” instructions. You just find the next checkpoint on the map and drive there. It was a lot like the TV show “Bullrun” long before that was ever invented. Over the years, it got a little more competitive with timed checkpoints and became the Premier Monte Carlo Rally in North America. Some people who had no interest in competition brought out their nice cars just to make the drive. You ran with the best cars that BMW, Porsche. Jaguar, Audi and Mercedes could build. All the best Japanese machines were there with hot rides by Nissan, Subaru, Toyota, Honda, Mazda and one very special black NSX. Every type of sports car has competed over the years, too, with one crazy team freezing their asses off in a topless red Cobra. There were muscle cars, pony cars, luxury cars and all kinds of modified machines running through the night. The banquet in a big ballroom in Vegas was also memorable. Prime rib dinners and an open bar and the funniest talk you have ever heard about the antics of the night. Huge bronze trophies were awarded to the winning teams. It was a legendary event with some legendary hangovers, too.

Here’s your chance to relive history. The Into the Night Rally Team is putting on “Stellar Luminescence” to celebrate the wonderful years of the Starlight Rally. It will have many of the same things we loved about Starlite with some differences to make it even more fun. If you think you’re a good driver, here’s a chance to prove it. If you’ve never seen the sun rise over the desert, you really should. If you just love driving your car, here’s a guided tour of the best roads you’ll never find on your own. It WILL be legendary.

Stellar Luminescence will run Friday night November 20th starting in Santa Barbara. The starting location is confidential at this time. More information is here: http://carzero.freeservers.com/ Free free to write questions here, too.

Talking No!

I have driven my home-built Cobra replica on this event 6 times. It broke down on two of the rallies (radiator and suspension) and we ran out of gas another time. The cars are running one minute apart, so while you are sitting on the side of the road fixing your car, you get asked once a minute if everything is alright and you have to explain over and over what the problem is. This is good if they happen to have what you need, like flares or a can of tire inflator (I usually carry three).

That time my suspension broke, I was so mad at my car, I asked one team if they had a gun because I wanted to shoot it. The navigator happened to be a fire chief and said "yes, I can help you with that". The answer was so unexpected it made me laugh.

The predecessor event, known as Starlite, ran for 30 years, run by the Santa Barbara Sports Car Club. ITN is reviving the event because it was really popular, at one time, over 180 cars started! The banquet was a lot of fun on Sat. night in Vegas. I ran a few of those events, it was extemely competitive, had a total error of .03 minutes for the event once, and finished second of 86 cars in class. More than once, it took a zero error to win.

This will be the same format as the Lost Horizon event, I helped write that one and also worked it. That one was a monumental event (it went to Zion National Park)! Hope to see some of you out there.

By the way, if you have a cell, you will be given a number to call if there is an emergency. If you don't show up at two consecutive check points, we start asking about you. So, if for some reason, you drop out, you need to call the emergency number so we don't go looking for no reason. As to gas, we plan gas stops at about 200 mile intervals, sometimes less. If greater, you are told how far it will be. I carry a full size spare, you may want to do so, you can get a cheap wheel and used tire and throw it in the trunk, just in case. That's what I do for my Stealth. And one other thing, even though we are all competitors, we are in this together. If we see someone has broken down, we stop and ask if you are ok, if you need help, if you need a ride. Yes, stopping can end your chances to win, but people count for more. The man in the Cobra will confirm that when he had problems, everybody going by asked if he was ok.

Hope to see some of you out there!

I started out my ITN rally experience with a 16-hour rally - the year-ending one in November. This particular rally took us from Lebec, at the north end of the grapevine, to Paso Robles, then back to Lebec using every back road imaginable. It was a beautiful drive, a GREAT course, and we actually won a prize. Mind you, it was the "Press on Regardless" award, but it was the camaraderie and the teamwork that made this such a fun event. I had gotten a mere two hours sleep the night before (the rally started in the early AM) because I'd found a family stuck on the side of the road, and had driven them to Los Angeles the night before, all while I stuck my navigator trying to figure out the directions.

Our team, Kanga Crew, we didn't ever really place that competitively in the top of our class, but we did have LOADS of fun out there. This Stellar Luminescence rally is something I'd recommend for any team of people - husbands and wives, it will either make your bond stronger, or break you up (j/k), friends - you'll definitely have a lifelong bond after sharing this rally for 12 hours, and anyone else - you've got to do this rally.

If the cops catch you speeding, you will get a ticket, or worse. Since the rally runs back roads at night, you don't see too many cops, watch out for small towns. The rallymaster has to write the rally so that if you go at the posted speed limit or at safe speed (there is some room for discussion there), whichever is lower, you have time to get it done.

Hope that helps.

If anyone out there wants to run, and needs a navigator/driver, let me know. I don't have a partner at this time. My Stealth is wired for rally computer and extra lighting, all I really need for the computer is a constant power source that does not turn off when the key is off, we can wire from the battery direct, no problem, done it many times. PM me or call my cell 818-903-0755 if interested. Split costs either way. Come back on Sat. afternoon after rally end or stay over for banquet Sat. night and come home Sunday, your choice.

so, is this one of those rallies that penalize you for arriving early or late? or is it just top time wins?
