This is why I cancelled my motortrend suscription years ago.
That and the "lets test it against the corvette" in every issue. |

I can't disagree with their choice. The Camry is a great car, comprable straight line performance with a WRX, reliable, and with excellent build quality.

On what planet does a Camry come close to WRX performance? It's a bland car built to purposely be blah and plain. They're boring to drive and Toyota just banks on the reputation (whether it's still true or not) to sell the vehicle. Ignoring my obvious Subaru bias there are quite a few other vehicles out there that could be better choices. I think they're just happy they actually did SOMETHING to the design of that car. |

0 to 60 in 6 seconds comes pretty close. Definitely better than an automatic WRX. I drove the 2 litre WRX and thought it was a joke. I got out of it thinking "you must have to launch this thing at 6000 rpms to get a sub 6 seconds zero to 60". Those 5.5 0 to 60 times on stock WRX's? Forget about it. Not going to happen unless you have a warhehouse of spare transmissions LOL.The Camry is a an awesome sleeper: You don't have to worry about people thinking you're a scrawny high school kid! If by sleeper you mean putting you asleep while driving I'd agree
.6 seconds 0-60 difference isn't really "close" That's like saying the WRX is close to the STi 0-60 |

It isn't all just 0 to 60 times. It's about build quality, economy, versatility. Toyota did a nice job on this car. They will sell tons of them, just like Toyota does every year. For what it is, it's a great car.

i used to have a camry and an avalon. yes they dont handle like a wrx, yes they arent as aggressive looking. but christ almighty, the cars never broke down, they were cheap to maintain, they did have very good acceleration (could smoke a auto-mustang), they pulled on many a integra and sentra se-r, got outstanding gas mileage, and was a smooth ride. toyota makes an excellent car, and by no means is it a wrx or sti, but for the general consumer, it is the best buy and everyone talking smack about it knows it.

I'm not the one saying it's a WRX... nor do I think the WRX belongs in Car of the Year considering it hasn't been truly redone in quite some time. However the Camry is about average in everything and that doesn't scream "Car of the Year" in any way, shape or form. They just went with the car that sold the most and called it a day.

They have almost identical acceleration, the WRX just cuts a quick 60' from teh launch. Get out on the highway/stragiht away of a road course, and the WRX will NOT pull away from MANY MANY MANY V6 Family sedans. STOP CONFUSING AN AWD LAUNCH WITH ACCELERATION. Power/weight and acceleration is best indicated by a 1/4 trap speed, not a 0-whatever test. Case in point....take a look at a 5-60 time for the two... In a staright line, those cars are near equals. As with a V6 Camry/Maxima/Altima etc. etc. A 2.0l WRX vs. a V6 Accord...forget about it. The Honda is pulling away ALL day, even though it runs .8 seconds slow to 60 from a stading start. |

Last I checked the 2007 WRX was not a 2.0L. Please don't go comparing a 2002 vehicle with a 2007 vehicle. I still run v6performance.net and used to have a V6 accord..... I'd never go back to one either. Call me crazy but I enjoy torque. If you're going to compare two vehicles go drive an 07 WRX, then go drive an 07 Camry. Or better yet, go drive a Legacy GT and tell me the Camry has a better fit and finish

Amen... the Camry's interior is teh cheapness. If you're going to make comparisons... compare apples and apples. Legacy vs. Camry... 2007 vs. 2007. The Camry is not a bad car... and the styling is pretty nice.

while i agree that both cars are equal in a straight line, 5-60 times of turbo cars are never all that good compared to NA cars for obvious reasons..turbolag
low displacement cars with large turbos are especially vulnurable at these types of contests. |

It's not all about performance...especially in America where trucks and midsize family sedans rule. The Camry is an excellent car for it's intended market. If all I wanted was a reliable & comfortable daily driver...that'd be it.

You're just as well off with a Hyundai Sonata or Kia Optima over the Camry. Hell the new Hyundai Azera is VERY nice for the money.
