06 wrx tr build help
Starting to get bored with my current setup so time for more power. It's my dd and I take it to the drags once or twice a year but besides that it's pretty much babied (except for the occasional spirited drive on the Arkansas curvy roads.) I'll list what is on the car, what I've already bought and what I'm lookin at purchasing. I'm looking for at least 300 awhp but would like to be at 350 awhp and not really wanting to go bigger injectors or mess with fuel pump yet. I've read and reread the unibombers manifesto and this is what I've come up with.
Currently on the car: borla catback, k&n typhoon (I know stock is better but it was already on there when I bought it), and Cobb 91 octane stage1 tune. Already purchased: uel headers, up pipe, and downpipe. This is what I'm looking at purchasing: ihi vf48 turbo (probably have it ported and polished), a larger tmic (possibly a CSS), upgraded intercooler hose, and an PDX etune (I'm not even close to any pro tuners). Will this get me to my goal? Thanks for any advice!

Are you running a stock BCS? If so I believe you will need an aftermarket (manual or electronic) boost controller to safely run the mods you listed. As for whether you will reach your goals, my setup is similar (ej257, larger tmic, uppipe, downpipe/ catless TBE, open source tuned, turbo inlet, grimmspeed bcs, short ram spt intake, 565cc sti injectors, dw300 lph fuel pump, vf39) and my tuner estimates 300-320 whp/tq once my tune is complete. Not a concrete figure but hopefully it gives you an idea of where you may lie.

Wouldn't that be covered by my tune? Or will the stock one just not handle it?

Your stock BCS will do just fine, but an aftermarket 3 port will give you more ease of mind for boost control.
I would get a downpipe and flash Stage 2 and see how you feel with it. Then go from there. |

What made you decide you want a vf48? When you say 300whp and 350whp on what dyno?

And why? Because you already have the parts, install them and see how you like it. And the up pipe is somewhat worthless since you are already catless stock. You can also read the countless threads on this subject to get a better idea. |

I'm here for goal of 300+ awhp not install a couple of parts and see if I like it. Ya I know this but since it was included with my headers it don't matter. I have searched and searched but not many builds with the vf48. What I have read is how I've put together this combo up top in the op. I'm just wondering if I've missed anything important. Thanks. |

You will not be able to hit 300+ awhp on an accurate reading mustang dyno with your stock fuel system. I suggest a dyno tune from a reputable tuner. Btw be careful with your tranny. Launching it often will result in a broken tranny.

Another question. The downpipe I have is for 02-05 can I just have a muffler shop modify the mid pipe or go ahead and just get one for an 06?

Also, I just posted this in ProfessWRX's thread which is very similar to yours... I was looking for a good turbo upgrade to get me to the 300whp range since Stage 2 wasn't cutting it for me @ 5200ft above sea level. After doing my research and talking to my tuner I ended up with the following setup - COBB 3" catted TBE - Perrin turbo inlet - SPT intake - Walbro 255 fuel pump - DW 750cc injectors - Grimmspeed 3 port EBCS - STI TMIC & Splitter/bellows (2007) - VF48 (off a 2012 w/10k miles) - COBB Accessport with custom dyno tunes for 19psi / 17psi / 15psi While I could have hit 300whp with a "lesser" setup I wanted to get it right the first time. I would definitely upgrade the fuel pump with the turbo upgrade. The whole install takes like 30 minutes. I had never messed with a fuel pump in my life before installing the Walbro and I still found it to be a breeze. |

Yeah from 02-07 they should be interchangeable.
Also I do not recommend modding injectors, some will argue with me, but your stock ones are worth anywhere from $200 to $300. Sell them or get the core for them and buy some 750cc, 850cc, or 1000cc. If you are near a place that has e85 I would buy 1000cc injectors get a custom tune on e85 and then you would have 350whp on a vf48. Last edited by aslese; 08-17-2012 at 04:04 PM. |

The shop that installed my vf48 sent out my injectors to be modded. I'm running them 25k miles later with no issues. I don't know what they flow though, I forgot to get the paperwork. And I actually just read the first post, so ill continue talking, since I have what you are looking at already. Basically depending on what dunk your on, you can make 300 with that set-up or not really be close. My setup is as follows: -vf48 -Modded injectors -tbe -Grimmspeed Boost controller -Larger TMIC -CAI I think that's it. But that setup put down 270whp/320tq on 92 gas. But I know from experiences it is as quick/little quicker than stg 2 Sti. And to me, I don't mind having the lower numbers, because its always a nicer surprise to someone who isn't expecting that much of a kick. Last edited by stevejones19; 08-17-2012 at 05:15 PM. |

I would say no to hitting 300whp with what you have listed. I hit 290whp/350wtq on a Dyno dynamics Dyno with a vf39, catless 3" dp, apexi exhaust, EBCS, sti tmic, walbro pump, turbo inlet. I wanted to be able to say " I have 300whp" so I went back and did P&L up pipe, tial 38 mm external, 1000cc injectors and I was hitting 315 on 93 and 350/416 on e85.
Now I swapped a 6 speed in with a light weight fly wheel and my tuner now has his own mustang Dyno so it's going back in for a retune after I get my ETS tmic, turbo blanket and hopefully a set of headers. |

At the end of the day you should find a reputable tuner for a custom tune and ask them what they suggest.
Btw since people are throwing around dyno names above 350whp on a low reading mustang dyno is pretty close to too much for stock internals while 350whp on a higher reading dyno like some dynojets is fine. So when your making a goal you should decide on which type of dyno. |

All 02-07 exhaust, turbo's, intakes, etc are interchangeable. Hell even the coil packs work on both 2.0 and 2.5L motors.

I would go with a slightly higher injector if you EVER plan on going bigger.

Doing a 650 size injector is a waste, the car stock has 565s. I would do at least 750.
An STI TMIC would be a nice addition to go along with the parts for sure. Having the turbo PnP will make for a faster spool as far as I know. Grimmspeed ebc for sure. If I'm not mistaken the up pipe on an 06 is not catted...could be wrong but on my 07 it wasn't. I am looking at doing a header before my next tune and plan to stick with UEL because he EL equipped cars I have heard in person do not sound good IMO. You loose the subi rumble however, the EL will give you more power. I was just talking to my tuner this weekend and he is trying to convince me to go EL. He said the car he just tuned with them sounded more like an EVO. |

You wont be happy with the vf48. No balls after 5500 rpm. Or at least it feels like it.....
