What's the deal with those side mirrors??? It seems like they forgot about them in the original design then someone just slapped them in an awkward spot on the door afterward.

THe base impreza has not been nor will it ever be a super sporty car. It was made to fit in the corrola and civic world. Sure you can drive any car sporty, and if you do, good for you. But the target audience of the 2.5i impreza sedans, is primarily to the basic transportation crowd.

This 2012 model seems to fit that need very well. The rumored 2.0 liter engine and CVT and extra room inside all point to frugal commuter, not performance. I am fine with this, as if it were not for the base impreza, we would not get the WRXs and STIs of the world.

EDIT: I feel the need to apologize for my comment though nonetheless. I never meant to imply that only people who drive STIs are enthusiasts. Far from the truth. Enthusiasts come in all sizes shapes and economic levels. Cars should being a smile to your face. Be it a 2.5i or a STI spec C. I was merely pointing out that the 2.5i is not targeted at driving enthusiasts as much as say a WRX or an STI.
No problem. We all get carried away sometimes.

Exactly. Every mass-market car brand has base models that some would consider "boring." All things considered—and with what little we know at this point—I'd say this is very encouraging.

The day Subie comes out with decent looking/aerodynamic mirrors is the day they have 40mpg models.

Those mirrors are aerodynamic, why do you think they were placed there?

It is due to safety regulations. The regulation says the hood (bonnet) has to be of certain height (or at least with a mechanism that it would pop-up upon hitting a human)

In order to match the body line, the A pillar has to be very steep, to a point that it is too far away from the driver (same as 06-11 Civic), so they have to put it somewhere else.

I think the 36 mpg would be the biggest seller for me. Looks like they finally made something that might get better millage than my 1.8L impreza. Which is a start in the right direction. Now if it's actually fun and practical... We'll see.

agreed. You can see it's not an afterthought of the 5 door.

There's a lot more design to this car that the profile pic doesn't show. Keep a watch on Subaru.com for more detailed pics.

36 mpg highway will go a long way towards helping Subaru improve their CAFE numbers.

How the heck did they get the number that high with all wheel drive?

Good work Subaru!

I don't like it at all... too bland. I hope the WRX has a wide body and large wheels. They learnt for the 2011 model to add the wide body to all WRX models so hopefully they will do that here.

I can't believe the direction they are heading in with this boring design. Seems to be the direction of the industry nowadays... too bad.

I'm glad they didn't make the headlights like the Legacy and Outback.
I don't care for the front quarter window.
Looks like the belt line is lower, nice for better outward visibility if that is the case.

Anyone know if Subaru going to be showing off a 5 door in New York of just the Sedan?

36mpg is very nice. SOA, is that with the CVT or a 6MT?
A 33% increase in fuel economy.
What's the curb weight?
Will NVH increase or handling suffer?

I don't think Subaru could get that kind of mileage out of just the new FB25. Or is the base Impreza going to have the FB20 or god forbid the US gets the EE20?

The New York Show starts on April 21st.

This would look good as a wagon, which I would rather have instead of a 5 door hatch. Extend that roofline back Subaru!

Everything I've heard is that it's a 2.0 engine. I just hope Subaru didn't resort to an on-demand, part-time AWD to achieve 36 mpg.
