Default Help Requested - 2015 WRX No Sound

Hi everyone. Been a long time since I've needed to post on Nasioc. I sort of lurk and learn. Got stumped on my audio issue.

TLDR
What it is: 2015 WRX w/HK Nav unit with no sound after changing car battery

What I've tried:
- Checked two fuses (one in the car one under the hood) and both are good
- Attempted (and probably failed) to test speakers with a multimeter to see if anything was going from HU to the amp, nothing conclusive (wire diagram from post linked below)
- Tested speakers in a diag mode using the Tree1 option in the post linked below and successfully got a radio station to play (at volume 52! and then it goes back to no sound once restarted and volume adjusted at all)
- Had the dealer take a quick look at it but they couldn't even get sound at all so likely didn't even do the test I did

Background:
Had my 2015 WRX for 3 years come Feb. and had to replace the car battery this past Sunday. Since then, I get no sound. It is an HK w/Nav unit (OEM part 86271va620). I hear the beeps when pressing buttons to switch radio stations or from FM to BT, which sound like they come from the speakers. Tried to research around and haven't really found an answer. Had the dealer take a look and was just told I need to spend another $900 on a HU. Which, if that's what I need, then fine, but can't believe you can short out the HU without blowing the fuse while just changing the battery? Speaking of which, I checked two fuses, one inside the car (10A) and one under the hood (25A), both fine.

Found this page that has the pin layout which I used to test with a multimeter (no conclusive answer other than the HU has power): https://forums.nasioc.com/forums/sho...28&postcount=9

That page also mentions a test diag option. I went into Tree1 to do the line diag/audio check. I can hear the radio playing after pressing the option to test the speakers. OK, so the music is going from HU to amp and then to the speakers, great! I exit diag mode and it restarts as expected. The radio starts playing as soon as I get to the subaru splash screen and continues to play (at like volume level 52 so it's blaringly loud). Because it's so loud, I go to turn it down and it cuts out altogether and I'm back to no sound.

Any savvy stereo guys in here have any thoughts on this? Or perhaps other tests to deduce what is happening? Will a new HU fix this? I guess I can't tell if it's the amp or the HU that needs replacing (speakers seem fine based on the Tree1 diag). Maybe I've missed something, but it'd be nice to not spend $$$ on a new HU to find out that didn't work either.

Much appreciated for your time. Hopefully I didn't miss a thread in my search that has had this issue already.

Given the behavior you're seeing as far as when it makes sounds, I suspect the problem is in the HU.

Probably the quickest/easiest way to tell will be to temporarily swap in another similar Fujitsu Ten navigation HU. It can be one that came out a Subaru that did not have the h/k system, but in that case you'll need to add a temporary jumper wire to pin #9 on the 10-pin portion of the car's power/speaker harness, to supply the +12V trigger signal to your car's h/k amp. It could also be one from a BRZ (which will provide the amp trigger signal). Ask around -- you can probably find another local owner who's willing to help (or even someone who's switched to an aftermarket HU and still has their OEM FT HU sitting in a closet).

Similarly, you can temporarily swap your OEM HU into any other Subaru that uses the same style FT nav (h/k or not), including a BRZ. Your HU has a normal 4-channel power amplifier IC, and is capable of driving speakers directly.

If an alternate HU works in your car (meaning there aren't any problems with your h/k amp), show that to the dealer and ask that they replace your HU under warranty. If your car is out of warranty due to mileage, you can try contacting SOA and asking for relief.

If the only option you're given is to spend ~$900 (or even 50% off) on a new HU, you can either look for one cheaper on eBay, or take the occasion to switch to an aftermarket HU.

BTW, your map SD card will only work on certain HU models (possibly only the same model number as the one in your car). So if you want to switch to a different OEM FT HU model permanently, make sure it includes the card (or is priced significantly lower if it lacks the card). Check Subaru's price on a replacement card before you commit to the purchase.

If you find that your HU works in another car and another HU does not work in your car, that would point to your h/k amp. It's harder to find another amp to temporarily swap into your car (in this case, you should find the exact same model number). But if you can demonstrate that your OEM HU works in another car, that may be enough for your dealer and/or SOA to proceed.

Again, if the only option they offer is for you to shell out hundreds of $ on a new replacement, you can dump the h/k amp and switch to aftermarket. There are harnesses available that will let you do that without having to hack into factory wires.

Those are some good points. I'll have to check my wife's forester, maybe that can be swapped in for testing. Would be the easiest anyway. I also have a couple Impreza's that I can try that with. That didn't occur to me.

Thanks SVXdc. I'll see what I can scrounge up. I'll update this with something once I know more or have tried these.

Well after being out of town for work since I posted this, I decided just to buy a new head unit on my long drive home and chance it. Grabbed a Kenwood ddx9703s (wanted Android auto so I didn't need to mount my phone anymore) with a Metra 70-1761 harness and LX-11 antena harness. Connected it up and I've got my stereo back!
