![]() well I think from like 97 or around there to 04 or so impreza's were map based to the snorkus was just acoustic, but earlier years 90 to like 97 were maf based and then they brought it back in 04. I have the hybrid intake on my 95 with a 1.8 and can notice the difference compared to the SRI I had before.

![]() I'm ordering a cosmo sri shortly, and gonna try the hybrid setup in the 2005 Saab 9-2x I just bought. Is there any benefit at all to getting a high-flow drop in filter for the factory airbox? If so, any recommendations on a good "dry" filter? I know K&N makes a drop in panel, but I'd rather not deal with the oiling and such (plus i've heard that can dirty up the MAF sensor if done incorrectly)

![]() My '99 impreza obs was a phase 2 maf ej223... Really baffled the subaru parts guys whenever i went in there :?
Williaty, do you have an oem filter in your setup? I have read articles both praising and criticizing aftermarket filters like the K&N. |

Don't worry about the panel. None of them flow enough better than the OEM paper filter to be worth your time. If you want a re-usable filter in hopes of saving money, though, look at the AEM Dryflow or AMSoil EaA lines of filters. Last edited by williaty; 03-25-2008 at 05:53 PM. ![]() You can't put an oil filter in your airbox! I just got an EaA. However, the oil analysis people over at the maintenance forums say that these filters don't filter as well and contribute to higher silicone counts in their oil (meaning more stuff gets through), but I decided to ignore that and get it for the sake of reusing it without much hassle. It seems to be a good medium between filtering the air and K&N's reusability, although they seem to have a reputation for letting crap through. But all these tests have so many variables and stuff that it's all inconsistent... Just do whatever... But the resuseability is a plus. I don't like K&N though, the oil that they use can gunk the MAF. |

![]() This is true of basically everything that's not a paper filter. The new nano-scale filters from AMSoil and AEM supposedly do a better job than oiled fibre or foam, and certainly better than the steel mesh, but still not as good as paper.

![]() So i installed a SRI a month ago. Gas mileage seems the same, and i'm not seeing any smoke. How can I tell whether or not my car is running rich?

![]() So let me get this straight in my head here. Taking out the snorkus and snorkel is way bad because the engine will run rich. But im no expert, or mechanic. So how rich is this running. Is it really that significant. Im in a 4eat so i wont be spending much time down in those rpm ranges. And the consequences for keeping my setup with just a snorkus/ snorkel delete would be...?

Long term consequences are unknown. However bore wash is not unreasonable, nor are fueling errors higher up in the rev range due to AF Learning established in this range. Basically, no one knows how big of a deal it is yet, but I'm not going to be the one that finds out. |

![]() Does the snorkus/ snorkel delete void the warranty? May be a stupid question but I really do not know. And Im not doubting your findings and research, dont get me wrong, but why would spt put out a sri if this is the case. Curiosity.

![]() 1) You need to read the "Warranties Can't Be Voided" sticky in Newbs (I think)
2) SPT is well known for putting out intakes that cause major problems (the LGT one is HORRIBLE) and AFAIK, SPT still hasn't come out with one for the MAF-based RSes |

![]() ...unless they can link the problem to whatever mod you made/unmade...correct? I was just wondering. I guess voided was the wrong word. So im guessing if I run into these problems they could prove it...thus answering my own question. Either way. Great thread williaty. Ill have to do some more research and see which way I want to go from here. But thanks for putting out the information. Great someone is looking out for N/A guys.

SPT's are far worse, they're overpriced and suck. |

![]() I was messing around with my SRI today, and extended it into the fender quite some distance, and to my surprise, it no longer bogs the engine at low RPM, and there's a massive power boost at 2,000 rpm. There's also no audible resonance until around 4,000 rpm, I'm wondering if I just accidentally happened across my own resonance chamber.

It is reasonable to assume that bends in the piping can take out helmholtz resonations. Also, williaty's discoveries don't apply for all MAF cars it seems either. Sometimes, it's inconsistent between cars. For the most part though, it does happen. However, it's only Will's car we have data from. We need more cars to log and show. And for the most part, people have seen this happen. The way people can get rid of them may be many. Especially for different years. |
