OMGHi2U How to use a 2010-2012 legacy ej253 in your 06-07 impreza 2.5i

I kept the 2012 2.5 legacy sohc and modded a few things so it now has a home in the impreza.

For those that are wondering (as I was) what he's referring to when he said he's still stuck with his '12 engine, see here.

I'm not exactly sure, but I think the 10 or 11 legacy started with the strange two piece pan on the ej253, until they went to the fb25 for the next change which is totally different altogether.

Yeah Patrick, I was referring to the for sale thread and forgot to mention that. I'm trying to hold off on removing the pan from the legacy engine so a potential buyer won't be worried but if it can be adapted I will close the for sale thread. I'm checking with a friend about making an adapter spacer to mate the normal metal pan to the block and adapt to the different bolt locations, but can't even do that without knowing if there are bolt holes for the pickup on the block or if the pickup hole is even in the same location.

Can you post up the two piece pan? At this point your cheapest choice it to at least try to see if the 253 pan matches the shortblock profile.

Having never seen the 2-piece version, my opinion might mean nothing, but I would be rather surprised if Subaru changed the entire block just to bolt up a different oil pan. I'd think the block is the same, so a "normal" pan and pick-up will work.

This is the pan it uses, the front row of bolts are 12mm head and their shank is thicker as well. I pulled two to check. Here is a good ebay pic: http://www.ebay.com/itm/252599509954...%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

10mm bolts like the others around the perimeter are too small to work. If you look closely the front edge also seems slightly diagonal while the normal pans have their front row basically parallel with the rear row. The pickup tube is also built into the pan and the pan holds the pickup tube to the block, there are no bolts for the pickup.

I will pull it in a few days if there is no real interest. I have a person inquiring but not sure if they realize whether or not it will work on their vehicle.

I figured out how to use the normal steel pan, had to drill and tap two holes that weren't there and tap the two for the oil pickup. Luckily the oil pickup tube mates to the same spot in both setups. The holes were there just no threads. I drilled two that weren't there for the pain flange and used 8mm allen plugs with sealant on the two holes that didn't line up with the pan. Then you just enlarge two of the pan holes a little for the m8 bolts that you have to use. So basically you will have two 12mm head (or allen like I used) bolts and the rest normal 10mm bolts holding the pan on.

The m8 factory hole next to my drilled and tapped m6 hole, and the allen plugs I used for the two unused holes:

Everything worked out great and the engine is now in the car running. I'm just waiting on the exhaust manifold gaskets from the dealer because no local parts places had them in stock.

I had to do some rigging for the pcv to block setup

That's awesome. I'm looking to do the exact same thing on my 2007 outback!

Thanks for the info! It seemed feasible, but I was concerned about the motor mounts and the oil pickup. That could have gotten pretty crappy if they weren't basically there.

Thanks Again,
Jeremy

Up to the top. I've had some requests for the photos in my drive folder, but no notifications from anyone here. Thanks for the interest.

Default Hi

I'm a bit unsure, but it seems like the 10 or 11 legacy models began with the unique two-piece pan design on the ej253 engine, then shifted to the fb25, which brought a completely different setup.

Hey Patrick, sorry, I forgot to mention earlier that I was referencing the for sale thread. I'm holding off on removing the pan from the legacy engine to avoid concerns for potential buyers. I might consider closing the for sale thread if I can adapt it. I'm exploring options with a friend to create an adapter spacer to connect the regular metal pan to the block and accommodate the different bolt positions. However, I need more information about the bolt holes for the pickup on the block or if the pickup hole aligns similarly.

The normal ej pan bolted to my legacy engine after removing its aluminum pan. The normal oil pickup tube will bolt on, I believe the holes are already there and just need to be threaded to m6x1.0.
The pan also uses most of the holes but one or two need to be filled with the allen plugs I mentioned in the photos, because those don't align with the normal ej pan holes.

Why did you have to plug the 2 holes that didn't line up with the pan? Wouldn't the gasket keep them from leaking? Is the Y-tube you have for the pcv from the legacy engine?

-Never mind. Just read the thread on the Legacy site. I think information that would be more beneficial to this site than the legacy site. But at least it's somewhere..lol. Thank you for your insight.

-unfortunately most of the pictures are no longer there.

Just did the same thing for my 2010 Impreza N/A. All went well and am hitting the 500 mile break in soon. Haven't heard from the OP. But thanks for giving me the courage to do this. Couldn't believe my luck and bought a brand new remanufactured block off CL for 600 bucks. He also threw in another engine with 500 miles on it for free. He says it might have bad rod or crank bearings but rolling it over and pushing on the pistons it seems to be all right. Now all i need is a car that needs an engine..lol.
