![]() i just bought a 99 obs a few weeks ago. i was thinking about getting a PDM and amsoil filter. later as i read more about CAI , i realize PDM/Ganzflow will blow my MAF sensor.
i wonder what intake will fit my car perfectly, as i don't want to spend too much money on it( less than $100). thankz

Weapon-R (do NOT get the "Dragon" filter... its crap. The V2 is decent) Use the stock front box and custom fab an intake tube. I've done this and it works well w/ a K&N, not quite the top end of the Weapon-R but a good cheap option. Modify a Cobb intake, talk to Danzborin... he's the Cobb intake whore around here ![]() |

![]() ![]() injen makes a good intake that works on the my99... and like BOY said the Weapon R actually works really well... I think the MAF makes any intake really usefull on the 98s and 99s... right now I just have the Cobb bend and MAF adapter with a cone filter on the end, so essentially a weapon R... not quite as good, but still light years ahead of the Ganzflow/PDM combo on the MAP engines... ![]() btw... BOY is the Weapon-R whore... ![]() |

![]() I figured I would do an update to my current mods post:
I drive a 2002 OBS Now I have: Cobb CAI $269 new Borla Headers $269 new from Subarustore.com(Good Vendor!) Headers were a perfect fit. I think they are the gen IV headers? Borla Cat-back..bought from a fellow board member cheap with only a few hundred miles on it. Darn near brand new! The piping is 2" with what I measured to be a 4" tip ![]() Likes: Sounds like I drive a V8 now! On the butt dyno it feels like a ton of power now....even from a AT... ![]() ![]() ![]() Dislikes: Can't think of any at the moment. Still getting used to the sound. Can be droning at low speed/ low rpms. Wife doesn't like it....Too bad for her! ![]() |

![]() I can't see the pic (firewall at work) but it could be depending on the build date... IIRC they switched from MAF to MAP mid run.

I don't frequent this forum, but I figure I'd post my setup for information PRM CAI Maxim Works headers. (makes a nice whistle noise starting at about 3k rpm. Sounds like a BOV when I let off the throttle. ) Bruellen Midpipe and Exhaust. (for some Throaty Boxer Rumble.) The exhaust setup came off a GC8, it fits nicely but the previous owner didn't have any cats, but I looked underneath there doesn't seem to be any room for any CATS because the exhaust is bolted so high to the underbody of the car. I have to run cat less. ![]() |

Weapon-R Dragon intake... the filter does suck but the intake is ok... I'm gonna slap a K&N on it this week or something as the bracket broke on the filter housing itself... I really want one of the new true ram air ones from rallispec but I a decent job first hehe... this intake sounds great and the power gain was good but yeah the filter and it's housing suck big time. Stromung Dual Tip - I tried 3 different exhausts before I tried this one and it was by far the best... bout 500 from SPD Tuning. The guy who runs SPD and Larry Ganz know more about impreza tuning than anyone I've ever talked to ![]() Looking into lightened pulleys and headers next... have a pro-ecm chip I'm gonna install soon, just haven't got around to it... |

![]() ganzflow intake: good for its price. ok power gains. 5zigen fireball or something universal muffler: pretty cool. combined with intake, i noticed some gains. more fun on freeway. love the rally pops. scare the crap out of people. fun in parking structures. magnifies the sound by 5 times. ![]() wrx muffler: its cool. its stock. not much gain. sounds little better. love the bird sound it makes when revving or turning off engine. got my stromung. it sounds nice, looks stock, so its good. doesnt pop as much as the 5zigen. o well. little bit more mid range power compared to the 5zigen. just bout a apexi n1 muffler from their garage sale. can't wait to put it on. waiting on borla headers and saving up money for high flow cat ![]() Last edited by mycarsux; 03-16-2004 at 07:58 PM. |

Ganzflow CAI Exhaust: Borla Header $230, Stock Cat, Custom 2.25" Midpipe $40, STI Spec C Axle Back $250(approx 2.3") This thing sounds awesome, nice and deep, but no resonance on the highway, easier to hear on downshifts. I don't know how much power I picked up, but it definitely revs better up top. The two things I like best about this exhaust is it was cheap, and no CEL! I take it back the best thing about this exhaust is the sound. ![]() |

![]() best things about the aem are they're all carb certified... so they're a legal mod anywhere. Depends on which one though you get performance wise. I hear the one that draws air from the bumper is the best.

CAI: COBB $269 Exhaust: Stromung catback, dual tip, not sst, $355. Bought the mid pipe about a year later, unk. price. Header: Borla IV Gen. from RalliTek, $299. Installed the header yesterday and have driven some but have not had a chance to really give the car a workout with it yet. Definitely know that it was worth the money. Performance is better, will have to drive it more to see where it is best shown. I already liked the sound with the exhaust and CAI(beautiful when you romp on it and it climbs above 3000 RPM and roars), and now it is even better. Header fit real nice. Header install--Unbolt at the engine, disconnect the two oxygen sensors, and break it loose at the mid pipe, makes it easier to get at the bolts where the header connects to the cat. Install can go back in piece by piece. |

-Weapon R intake with silly Dragon filter from NOPI.com,$150? K&N on the way. -GFB matched alt & crank pulley, still have interior lights dim at idle at night ($200 from Boxer4racing) -Borla gen 4 SS headers ($200 wholesale acct w/Borla) -Stormung SS hi-flo cat ($350 from Boxer4racing) -Stromung SS hi-flo midpipe/resonator ($200 from Boxer4racing) -Kartboy hangers ($30 from Boxer4racing) -Borla/SPO rear muffler section ($270 wholesale acct w/Borla) -upgraded power/grounds in engine bay -Optima Blue Top battery -The pulleys and intake were put on first, back in September, intake was a little loud but tolerable, engine felt like it reved much quicker with GFB pulleys, shaved 4 pounds off crank shaft. Minor but noticable performance improvements. -Complete exhaust done early December, headaches..... -after cracking a socket, stripping head, sheared 1 factory exhaust header bolt, drilled and re-tapped. -original cat donut was unusable, wish it came with the hi-flo, 2 trip to dealer to get correct one, not a legacy part, I think correct one was from original WRX. -o2 sensors didn't want to come free, re-used the originals and put anti-seize on all bolts. As for the performance, WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The car was noisier than expected, being a wagon, nothing a little Dynamat wont cure, but glad I got the resonator. It has a nice rumble at idle, similar to a Ducati motorcycle. Above 3k rpm, it pulls VERY strong on the highway. Just got a new G-tech on ebay for $50, performance #'s to follow....... No CEL, until this morning. SOB.......... checking it out tomorrow. |

Homemade CAI cost $12 Borla Ver. 4 Header cost $279 Internet Custom 2.25" Testpipe/trackpipe(cat eliminator) cost $50 Local Muffler shop Custom Midpipe 2.25" cost $50 Local Muffler shop Stromung axel back dual tip muffler cost(was on the car when i bought it) Likes: Stromung=deep sound CAI=not as jerkey louder, deeper faster reving Header=not much maybe a little on top, quieter inside louder behind testpipe&midpipe=a lot more on top and raspy but WRC car raspy(it sounds gooooood) Dislikes: CEL comes on due to no cats(have to replace cats and intake in order to pass smog(intake= visual inspection) Other Comments: I got the test and mid pipe so cheap because i fabricated my own flanges and fit and welded everything myself. So i paid less but spent an entire weekend on it. was it worth it? It sounds like a friggin WRC car of coarse it was worth it stupid ![]() |

![]() Such an old thread, yet I've never seen it. Weird.
![]() (Well unless I replied once and forgot since...) '00 2.5RS, ~100,500 miles, 5-spd. K&N air filter. Purchased ~ summer 2000. LIKES: Uhm.... bling? DISLIKES: Cleaning's a pain. BroSpeed muffler/intermediate pipe (or at least I THINK I got the pipe). The factory-option one. Cost? I don't remember, but it was too much. ![]() LIKES: Sounds pretty nice, actually. Very subtle, much more noticeable from outside the car. (Sounds obvious, but some exhausts are noticeable inside the cabin. Mine isn't, really.) DISLIKES: Costed me WAY too much at time of purchase. Not sure how much wider piping is included, honestly I've never looked. Kartboy Hangman exhaust hangars (black). Kartboy.com. Purchased: sometime mid-2002. LIKES: That muffler/exhaust isn't going ANYwhere. ![]() DISLIKES: **Royal** pain to install. PDM-Racing CAI, not currently installed. Ordered from PDM direct, $50 US (~$75 CDN at time of purchase in 5/03). LIKES: Uhm, looks shwanky under the hood. ![]() DISLIKES: Haven't noticed any gains/changes. A little extra noise at WOT, perhaps. (I guess that's a "like" ...!...) Plan: upgrade to 2.25" piping all the way up, if I need to. (Does anyone actually know how far back the "intermediate" pipe goes? And is it a 2.25" pipe? What's the stock piping? So what else would I need to replace, just a center section behind the cat?) Eventually will get a Scoobysport exhaust, high-flow cat. and some Revolutions Motorsports headers. -S2- |

![]() S2:
The exhaust sections are as follows from the engine back: headers - cat section (includes both cats in the one pipe in your case) - mid (intermediate) pipe - axle back muffler section. Stock piping is 1 7/8" or the metric equiv IIRC. |
