I have a 2000 2.5RS 2door 5MT

I have a Cobb CAI that I bought used from a friend. I don't remember the price exactly but it was significantly less than buying it new.

Likes:
I did a lot of looking around at intake systems before picking it up. From what I had read it seemed the Cobb caused the least low-end power loss. I didn't perceive any low-end loss from it, so I like that. It sounds really mean at WOT too!
Dislikes:
None, really.

Current Exhaust setup:
My car was rear-ended before I bought it and came with exhaust issues that I was aware of. Because of this, my stock midpipe has been hacked to bits several times to try and make up for the bends in the headers and cat section. I recently replaced the cat with a used cat and am now getting CELs on long drives.

Likes:
None, really... aside from it being quiet and not attracting attention.
Dislikes:
The whole thing has been giving me headaches both figuratively and literally. I'm pretty sure I am getting exhaust fumes in the cabin from time to time which is not good.

Future Exhaust setup:
I currently am in the process of picking up everything I need to fix this once and for all. I have almost all the parts sitting in my living room just waiting for it to be warm enough for me to work in my garage. My new system will consist of
Borla Headers -> Random Tech cat -> Stromung unresonated midpipe -> Prodrive Axleback.

Likes:
I'm not entirely sure what to expect at this point. Hopefully the butt dyno will notice a bit more power out of all this, but that's really not why I did all this. With the full stainless system hopefully I will never have to worry about my exhaust again as long as I own the car.
Dislikes:
Price... this stuff ain't cheap. I hope my car doesn't become ungodly loud... I have been in some RSs that have been almost unbearably loud. From what I have read though, I am getting about the quietest muffler there is. I also hope I'm not constantly throwing CELs either.

I will give an update once I get all this stuff bolted up.

Car: 01 2.5RS 5MT coupe

Intake - Injen CAI bought from NOPI online ($218 plus shipping, had it to my door in 4 business days)
Likes - no loss of low end, sounds normal at most throttle positions, sounds like a WRC car when you open it up. Nice nice nice power once the ECU learns what to do with it.
Dislikes - I'm a little concerned about how low in the fender the filter sits, but I don't plan on rally-x'ing any streams, and I can watch out for deep puddles.

Exhaust - WRX back section with custom, coated, resonator-less midpipe, and Kartboy hangers. (under $300 installed)
Likes - Sound is good when you start it and at WOT, otherwise sounds stock. No unecesary attention drawn. Cost also - bought the 3k mile used WRX headerback (I ended up not using the cat or the cat pipe), had the custom midpipe made, and the whole thing installed for less than $300.
Dislikes - I'm sure the gain isn't as big as the good catbacks out there (Stromung, Borla, etc.). The sound isn't too loud which is a like and a dislike, but I think a header and a hi-flow cat will change all that.

Intake: Short ram/CAI off of ebay. Got it cuz there is really no brand name that makes a CAI/ntake for an older L. I paid$40 for it and it has been worth every penny. The K&N filter sucks colder air through the fender along with the hot engine air. this is why it is a combo of a shirt ram intake and a CAI.

Exhaust: Custom 2.25" intermediate pipe to a 5Zigen axleback. Nice rumbly boxer sound at idle and WOT. Yet on the ighway it is very loud and droning. Cost was around $200 total.

Likes: Car has a much better midrange now. No bottom end or top end was lost.

Got my exhaust set up all on now... Cobb CAI/equal length headers, stromung midpipe +dual tip muffler. Awesome power... between those the pulleys and power chip this car hauls nicely. Still want to go FI at some point but this will do nicely for a while. My only complaint is it's louder than I'd like it to be right now... looking into getting a resonated midpipe to quiet it down just a bit... headers seemed to take the noise from the engine and move most of it to the back of the car. Just a couple minor things then gonna get it dyno'd... had a few people (that know 2.5s well) guess that it was around 200-205hp (at least if I was at sea level )...faster climb overall to revs and the feel of the power kicking in at a lower rpm than before... it's damn fun

be sure it get the quiet resonated bruellen... heard even that is loud for some people but it quiets down after a month... I think I'm holding off on a resonator for little bit longer to see if the cobbs just need to burn in some to quiet down. I like the sound and I think it has gotten a bit softer... but if it doesn't after a month or so I'll just go to a Meineke and get a resonator welded into the midpipe.

( connected directly to sensor )
likes- great sound, really deep and distinctive
dislikes- car was bought salvaged w/out filter, so the first thing i did was slap that on. cant tell if ther is a power difference from baseline.
exaust: 2.5" stainless steel custom catback pipe to 4.75" Blitz Nur Spec muffler- piping, $90 Blitz, $300 at ASP in Daly City
likes- great sound, pulls really hard at midrange, very distinctive compared to all of the civics in my area; great boxer sound.
dislikes- NONE!

Lol... I used to live in San Carlos. Wish I knew you before I left... My other friend with an RS in RWC recentely moved to San Diego. Yeah I got the coated with the cat. It would make a diff in the long run no matter where you go... plus it would have a higher resale value because the condition would be so much better if you ever want to sell. Here in Denver it was just a good idea either way. My stromung has some rust forming on it and it's not the stainless. So I might have to go with a new exhaust in a couple years or get this one chromed or something. I need to get a resonator welded into the midpipe at some point... I don't mind the tone it's just a bit too loud for a daily driver. Car hauls though... even in the altitude can keep up with a stock wrx

You refer to a power chip. May I ask which one you are using?

Likes: Everyday it just gets better and better. It seems a little quicker and more responsive. If you punch it you definetly feel it and hear it.

CAI type and Cost: Gravel Sports Intake, top mount, with K&N air filter. $270 plus shipping of $25

Exhaust type/size Cost: stock

Place of Purchase
CAI: Sean at scooby specialties. search "gravel" and yee shall find!

Likes: Pulls hard, sounds awesome. sweet investment. i have not looked back since. revs fastser and does NOT loose low end power at all.
Dislikes: its rusty in some spots from scratching during install. but thats my fault. i gotta paint it again but that will take all of 10 minutes.

Other Comments: highly recommended, the simple fact that it's top mount had me at "hello"

CAI Ganza & k/n panel filter

Header: TWE Super Stock
Cats: Stock for now. Have a TWE 2.25 on hold.
Piping( Cat back): Borla with an 18" X 2.25 Resonator
Muffler: Borla

Likes: Before the installing the resonator I really felt the power gains. But the Droning, within the in the cabin, was horrible. However the car never bogged down with starting off for a stop. Even if I just rolled and let off the clutch. Wierd.

I asked for the longest resonator out there with a 2.25 core. The car still has a bit of droning but is livible. The some of the gains were lost.

Example (nothing sciencetific: There is a long, fairly steep HWY bridge (Alex Fraser north bound) close to were I live. Its 80km/h speed limit. So from the base of the bridge I'd floor it from 80km/h. At the peak I am going:

Stock
145ish km/h

TWE header > stock
150ish km/h

TWE header> stock cats> Borla cat back
160ish km/h

TWE >stock cats > Borla Catback with resonator
158km/h 99% sure on the reading

Dislikes: Being new to Modding I have to say I needed to do more research. This setup (Borla cat back) is make too much noise for my tastes. Live and learn.
Doesn't make my RS a WRX. But this was known.

Cost: pains me to admit this:
CAI $200 cdn
headers $979 cdn
Catback $970 (installed) cdn

Advice: The RS is an awesome car. My goal is to upgrade it to the level I feel it should have been sold. However don't lose sight of the fact that it will never be "Fast". Hind sight I should have bought a $500 junker and saved up for another year and bought my RS instead of finacing it.

Plans:
Pay off car
Suspension
Brakes
Wide, light 16" rims so I can mount 235's
Quick turning rack

custom made 2.5 inch headers flowing to a high flow cat then exiting out of 2.5 inch mandrel bent tubing. total cost for the entire system was about $450-500. purchased from a friend who works for an exhaust shop.

likes: the power gains were nite and day after all was said and done. well worth every penny spent.

dislikes: the noise level is WAY up there now, almost to the point of bothering me when im just crusing. maybe ill have my friend throw in a resonator just to tone it down a tad

i also have a LW flywheel and crank pulley, street/strip clutch and a torque chip

Basic posting suggesitons.

2002 Outback Sport 2.5

CAI type and Cost: Cobb CAI, $180 shipped

Exhaust type/size Cost: Stromung Type XA, 3.5" tip, $300 shipped

Place of Purchase: Both used on NASIOC forum

CAI: I put the CAI on a week before the exhaust and the loss of low end was noticeable as well as the noise the CAI makes. It definitely sounds good. It was pretty easy to install although the directions seemed a little out of order. I am a total beginner too, so don't be worried, buy the Cobb.

Exhaust: The XA is pretty new from Stromung I guess so I couldn't find much info before I bought it. I am stoked because I got a good deal with low miles on it. It looks really good with the 3.5" tail opening. I used some Kartboy hangers and it stays tucked up close to the bumper so the size of the tailpipe is not as bad as you might think if you are worried about that. The power gain from the exhaust leveled out the low end torque loss caused by the CAI.

Likes: More power in the mid-range RPMs for sure. Even more fun to drive.

Dislikes: Noise is annoying, some drone, but Subies already have a lot of road noise stock and are poorly insulated so it's no surprise. I get an occasional backfire every now and then, but it is not cracking loud so I can stand it. I want to do the headers, mid-pipe, and cat later, but I am going to look into sound dampening insulation.

If you have a 2.5 RS with Borla headers and a hi-flow cat let me know about the noise level and additional torque loss. Does it eliminate backfires or make them worse? Please PM me and let me know.

Likes: Deep rumble with apexi, wild sound when you get on gas with the cobb.

Dislikes, huge apexi tip is kinda ricey, lost alot of low end with the borla but gained some serious top end.

Plan on adding a high flow cat soon, hopefully i can find a happy medium, gain some of my low end back and keep some of the top end.

1989 2.7ltr Subaru XT6 (FWD/Autotranny)

CAI: JC Sports Intake, $100 used
Exhaust: Dynomax Ultra Flo SS 2.5", $99
Catco 2.5" cat converter:, $50 used
2.5" piping from cat to muffler piping,
Custom Rallispec Modified Header, $400 approx.

Likes: Exhaust has a nice deep rumble at idle, is better flowing than stock and it prepares for future mods. Exhaust is boring looking with no chrome or chromed tips.
JC Sports intake has better flow than stock and a decent power gain throughout the powerband in all gears.

Dislike: Exhaust is boring looking with no chrome or chrome tips. Exhaust is so free flowing that there's significant power loss at lower rpms, especially with cams.

Other Comments:
With the addition of Delta Cams, ProECM Powership (yes, I dyno'd it and it works), fuel controller (Apexi Fuel regulator, Hyper SFC), custom Unorthodox Racing Pulley, Protorque torque converter and some more dyno tuning in a couple of weeks, I hope to put the smack down in the N/A class at the next East Coast Subaru Shootout. In reality, I'll probably get owned by 90% of the class. Old school N/A baby!

Future mods: 4.11 or 4.44 gears from Legacy, Custom 3" maf housing/sensor, RC Engineering modified throttle body - 3".

I have a question. Does the 04 RS have a MAP or MAF sensor. I have heard conflicting information.

Do you only have the single large airbox right off the throttle body? IF so you have a MAP. If you have an airbox near the fender and a plug going to it you have a MAF... Forgive me but I haven't checked out the 04 RSs at all. More than likely you have what all MY00+ have, a MAP.

I have the air filter right off the throttle body, then I have the piping to a second box that has the intake silencer(I think it is) attached to it. I don't know if that will help. Oh hear is a link to a picture of a car just like mine(color too!)
