Have a Nice Day? File under "my dealer told me"

He said that the two major projects down the line (other than typical product updates) is a two-seat roadster and a separate line of hybrid vehicles. I asked him about the hybrids, he reiterated that they would be designed and marketed separate from the existing subaru lineup.

Again just a wild rumor. But interesting to think about.

neither of these are suprising, the concept roadster they put out about a year ago (or more) was well received, and everyone has to have a hybrid these days to keep up, and if you don't, you better be making one.

But I thought it was interesting that they would be marketed separately. Like a division of Subaru. (Imagine Saturn becoming GMs Hybrid brand.)

Yes it seems a bit strange. I would think hybrids would've been a good match with the old less performance/premium oriented Subaru brand. Since the roadster was a hybrid that makes things more strange but I think it is unlikely they will mix the two.

There's no reason you can't have performance in a hybrid. The hybrid Accord is faster than the rest of the lineup...

Yeah, I'd like to see the Roadster powered with a performance hybrid engine. They're all starting to figure out the potential for hybrids beyond 60 mpg, finally. Super quick, torquey cars that don't hog gas? Sounds like a winner to me.

I really can't see a separate line, though. Why woud they do that?

Maybe so they don't have to be AWD?

A separate line?
Do you mean how Lexus is to Toyota?

That is a good point. The AWD really eats up the gas mileage on out Subarus.

Very true. I think this hybrid takes the cake: Toyota Volta. Now if only we'd see a hybrid with those specs actually come to the market. I think people would take hybrids much more seriously if a highly publicized car hit the market that could compete with the best supercars.

If the hybrids are not AWD then Subaru will be competing directly with Honda and Toyota. That's going to be tough, especially with a new and unknown brand.

Subaru needs to fix the fuel consumption problem, never mind hybrid. The LGT does a lot worse than the Acura TL for example, in real world driving - and that's a very drivable BMW competitor, with significant performance.

Huh? My wife's '04TL gets almost exactly the same mileage as my LGT; 22-26 mpg depending on city/highway mix. Had TL for about 1.5 years and LGT for about 0.8 years.

i personally think it would be really stupid for subaru to open up another brand for their hybrids.. dont forget subaru isnt rich like honda toyota,etc.. but the fact that they are first trying to establish themselves as premium products is one goal they must first reach.. i think the best idea would just be to wait and add hybrid models to their current line up than to form another brand

Same as above, there's no reason hybrids can't be AWD either - the new Lexus 330H and the Toyota Highlander hybrid are both AWD.

Default from what I heard....

from what I heard talking to the SOA people at the last few meetings I've been at and at lunch at the auto show, progress on the hybrid is pretty slow, because it's going to stick to the subaru heritage and be a boxer hybrid, so they can't gank anyone else's design and modify it. They said 2010 would be realistic. that should be just long enough for the hybrid craze to pass, and Honda to be mass marketing fuel cell cars.
As for a 2 seat roadster.... I'd have to see it to believe it, but I've heard it's in the pipeline as well. I just don't think it will sell well as AWD, most vehicles in that market are RWD, except the TT, and that's questionably too upscale for Subie's market share.

I sure hope they keep AWD for the roadster, I know that is the reason my brother will purchase it. For me I'd have to compare to the Impreza more.

Didn't Subaru already announce they were licencing Toyota's hybrid technology?

As for the roadster, I think AWD will sell very well. It greatly extends the practicality of the car and is not a big deal for Subaru to build since all their USDM cars are AWD anyway.
