Question Question on Auto Trannies and warranty coverage -- yes, it's OT.

I've got a CEL on teh Caravan. Pulled the codes, and I seem to be the lucky recipient of:

- Transmission Control System Malfunction
- Shift Solenoid B (2-3) Malfunction

Seems consistent with what le rolling condominium is experiencing... the bitch is stuck in second gear.

Anyhow, I took it over to my dealer today to find out whether it'll be covered under warranty. For the record, it's an MY01 with 80,800km (50,500mi) on the clock.

I was told that I have a 5-year, 100,000km (62,500mi) powertrain warranty on it, and that said warranty covers anything that's internal to the engine, the transmission, and the differential.

I'm taking it in tomorrow morning and I know that the dealer will try to cover as little as possible under the warranty... any tips? Seems to me that a shift solenoid is *internal*, and the tranny control system is prolly malfunctioning because of the solenoid... I'm hoping I'll get away with only having to pay for like... I dunno, tranny fluid or something.

How can I make sure I'm not getting screwed by the dealer? Any insights?

TIA

I hope so. I also know that Caravan trannies are notorious for premature failure... so I kinda expect the dealer to try and wiggle out of it and I dunno how to prepare for counterargument.

Basically I'd just reply with their attempts to weasel out by pointing out that you have a warranty and this should be covered under that. Short of them proving you did neutral drops (in a Caravan) they'll be hard pressed not to cover it.

Ha Ha! You're in 'limp mode'

It'll be covered under warranty, they will throw a rebuilt unit in it for ya. Get a cheap trans cooler from Pep-Boys, it should keep it from happening again.

<--- owned a '93 Shadow with same trans...went through 3 before converting to 5-speed.

The older Caravans came with a 3-speed trans in them that was mechanicly controlled and didn't have this problem. I used one of them first but I destroyed that during a race where I down-shifted into 2nd at 75 mph.

You'd have fun putting the 5-speed in there. I don't see why not though.

My parents had an '86 Caravan back in the day that had the trans go out twice. What a POS.

Yeah, tell me about it. But, in searching for ODB codes and transmission problems, I came across a late-80s Caravan that ran like 12.3 in the quarter.

Cancer, I think. Not sure, having a little trouble finding the site.

Did find this, though. 12.65 @ 105.44MPH

Le bump -- it's been fixed under warranty. Out of pocket $15 for tranny fluid.
