Default help - looking for less than MSRP on STi

Howdy CA folks,

[long, funny-but-not-ha-ha-funny story]
Took my second stab at shopping around yesterday, stopped by Stevens Creek Subaru. I should know it's a bad omen for the dealer when you see SEVEN STi's just sitting on the lot... anyway, I talked to the most ridiculous assclown "sales manager" who really turned me off to this dealership. I told him that several dealers across the country are offering under MSRP, and therefore I'd be unable to pay MSRP or above as a matter of consumer principle. He was rude and insulting, and said "I'd have to question your principles."

I said "Well, I think we undestand each other, thanks for your time" at which point he latched onto my leg like a Proselytizing Jehovah's Witness Pit Bull , desperate to keep me from leaving, but trying his best to insult and attack me at the same time. The funny thing is that when I first walked in he said "we can cut you a deal, things have been slow lately... we could even reduce our markup for you!" and when I was leaving he said "YEAH, WELL I SELL STI'S OVER STICKER ALL DAY LONG!!!"
[\long, funny-but-not-ha-ha-funny story]

I wish I could have gotten his name, but I was too busy trying to get myself and my wife out the door.

The first experience I had was at Carlsen in Redwood City, I talked to (I think) the owner or the GM and told him, "I'm having a horrible time trying to decide between the evo and the sti!" He said, "Look, I know how you feel. I'm sure you'll make the right decision, but in the meantime why don't you have a seat here?" as he unlocked and opened the door to an STi with a big SOLD sign on it. Then he left me alone. I liked that guy, but all they had available was a black/silver (my last choice) though they were actually offering under MSRP for it.

I'll be talking to Carlsen some more, but my actual question is: Does anyone know of any other cool dealers in northern or southern cal that will sell under MSRP? The other thing is I don't want any of the options, especially the turbo gauge - the black one at Carlsen was loaded with an extra $500 of stuff I didn't want.

oof, that was long-winded, wasn't it?

Thanks!

as for taking your STi from fairfield... it's worth it, what a way to go out

though I gotta say. The more I think about it, the more I'd be willing to fly out and find something about a thousand miles away. What a perfect way to break it in...

Contact Broken Arrow on i-club. He is a sales consultant at Green Valley Subaru in Fairfield and currently has 2 STis in stock below MSRP.

Talking

Carlsen Subaru is great.

In December 2001, went to Steven's Creek. They didn't have a silver one with manual tranny, so they put down the MT, said the AT was high tech and just as fast, even told me how much it would cost to replace the MT clutch ($1k+), etc. I'm not stupid, and I knew what I wanted.
I drove up to Carlsen where they had 5 silver WRXs with MT (& various options) and a fixed 2.75 percent over invoice, regardless of options, etc. Very nice. Outta there in literally 30 minutes with exactly what I wanted.

Your gonna have some fun with the STI!

It did! I checked the prefs thing to change my PM from OFF to ON, and then I noticed that I registered back when I lived in Newton, MA. Heh heh.

I do miss MA quite a bit, but I really don't miss changing snow tires and shoveling driveways.

Default muchas gracias!

Thanks for all the replies, folks! I'm even starting to think this could happen earlier than the 2-4 month timeframe I was setting.

best,

Hey! I don't have that email I sent, but it basically said...

GO TO CARLSEN! And PM member "lfungus". Larry is a great salesman. They get quite a few STis.

All of the salesmen you see at Carlsen are actually sales managers.

If lfungus doesn't respond to his pm, just email him at [email protected]

He, or someone else, will get back to you within several hours.

Also, you can expect a general rule of thumb that they will give you a no hassle, non-negotiable, take it or leave it offer, unlike the BS that Steven's Creek dishes out all the time to try to get you to buy.

If you're ready to buy, they can have you in and out of the dealership in less than 2 hours.

So, what should one expect to pay for an STi in the Bay Area these days?

Default man, hard to find a non-JBP

Looking at dealer inventories, seems like most people around here only have java black pearl. While I do like JBP, it's at the bottom of my list... I wonder if it's at the bottom of other peoples' lists as well? Maybe that's why we're seeing reports of below-MSRP?

You can try Larry Fung at Carlsen. He offered $700 under msrp but most STi's come with options already installed. You can order one with no options but dont' know how long you have to wait.

PM'd you.

We are start seeing STi being sold at MSRP or slightly below MSRP in the Bay Area because the sales are not that Rosey. When the news of STi coming to U.S. came out, everyone jumped on the waiting list, but in reality not too many of these people can actually afford this car! At MSRP with tax, license, etc, a nice sound and security system ($3-$4K), insurance, this car could cost over $40K very easily. Now you start seeing STi sitting in dealers' showroom for more than 2-3 weeks before it's sold. No matter how greedy dealers are, they have to turn the inventory over which means selling STi at MSRP or under. If you can wait longer, I guarantee you the price WILL drop more.

I got mine at Albany Subaru at MSRP. If you count the options dealer throw in for free, it's slightly under MSRP. I am sure there are better prices out there in the Bay Area, but I just don't have the time to really compare shop. If you want to check Albany Subaru out, call Keith (sales person) or Sunny (sales manager) at 510-528-1244. Tell them Howard referred you. I believe Munzer (sp?) is the Internet Sales Manager. Good luck.
