For those of you who are in the Tokyo area, have you found any decent Subie salvage yards? There are some yards near Chiba and some insurance lots (yards that handle accident cars that are being held pending formal disposition) but most of these yards have relatively little Subaru inventory are most are geared toward large scale dismantling and export. Since this comment doesn't fit easily into other forum topics, I thought I would post it here. I am seeking local Japanese sources for 2008-2009 5EAT drivetrain and transmission components for my personal daily driver. I am not impressed with the local Sube dealer service departments nor their ability to get parts. What parts they can get, involve long wait times and have a 300-400% mark-up compared to channels outside Japan.

Welcome to Japan!

I'm out here in Chiba as well!

I have not been to or seen much of these salvage yards. It seems that many of these totaled cars are simply dismantled and the parts are listed on yahoo auction. You can try to search on Yahoo auction for a good deal.

Hey guys!

Still not in Tokyo yet. I'll be there in May. I just bought a Vivio RX-R, pretty excited. Been spending a lot of time on Google.jp and Yahoo Auctions trying to find some parts.

As far as salvage yards, I've been told by a lot of people that land is hard to come by so that's why people don't let cars just sit on land and hope people buy them. I know there are a few up near Zama but I've been told they are private yards. I guess all of our best bets is to keep an eye on Yahoo Auctions.

I've always been curious about the large overgrown lots with smashed cars tightly packed together, and no office or signboards. Are these yards owned by insurance companies? The places I've seen in Ibaraki have had the same cars rusting away for several years!

That's a good question, they could just be car enthusiasts/horders that ran out of time, passed away, ect. I'll be sure to explore Japan and do what Wasabi Cars recently did in China and document those left behind interesting cars.
