Default Is this a scam? #774503

I'm selling my car on autotrader and I get this email saying that this guy is SO interested in my car. I write back and tell him it's available, and this is what he responds with:
Quote:
Dear Belcher,

THANKS FOR YOUR TIME , EFFORT AND COOPERATION ,PLS WE RECEIVED YOUR MAIL . IN RESPECT OF OUR ENQUIRES ABOUT YOUR VEHICLE YOU HAVE FOR SALE BUT WE HAVE A LITTLE QUESTIONS FOR YOU JUST TO BE ON A SAFE SIDE WHILE WE ARE DOING THIS TRANSACTION.

(1)WHAT IS YOUR FIRM PRICE?
(2)PLS CONFIRM YOUR VIN NUMBER?
(3)PLS ATTACH SOME VEHICLE PICS FOR PROPER VIEW .
(4 )ANY ACCIDENT HISTORY?

MY WIFE WILL BE COMMUNICATING WITH YOU IN RESPECT OF THIS TRANSATION BECAUSE I WILL BE TRAVELLING FOR A CONFERENCE BY TOMORROW AND MIGHT NOT HAVE ENOUGH TIME TO BE DISCUSSING WITH YOU IN DETAILS ON THIS.

IT MIGHT NOT BE POSSIBLE FOR US TO COME AND LOOK AT THE VEHICLE AND TEST DRIVE BECAUSE OF THE NATURE OF MY WIFE'S JOB AND MY ABSENCE.SHE WILL MAKE ARRANGEMENT FOR A PREPAID SHIPPER ONCE WE AGREE ON THE TERMS.ONCE EVERYTHING GOES WELL WITH THIS TRANSATION AS WE ARE PROPOSING,SHE WILL INSTRUCT THE SHIPPER WHEN PAYMENT HAS REACHED YOU TO COME FOR INSPECTION AND PICK-UP OF THE VEHICLE.

WE WILL ALSO LIKE TO KNOW IF YOU HAVE THE TITLE AND THE PRESENT LOCATION OF THE VEHICLE.

Den [ Laction Canada ]
Anyway I wonder if it's worth going any further with him (I wouldn't let him take anything until the check cleared) or if I should just drop it now.

for some reason I also think the same.
Try and get a phone number and whole address from them. If they are serious, they shouldnt have much problem in doing this. Also talk the the "wife" since she will be dealing with the transaction.

I smell a scam though.
Bad engrish, all caps, doesnt want to deal personally or take a look at the car. Next thing youll know he will send a 20k check and want you to return the difference.

I wonder if they do that to minimize their mistakes when writing in English.

Agree with everyone about the high scam factor...
But it does seem he is saying that once payment has reached you they will then arrange for the car to be picked up/shipped. Or am I reading that wrong?

And yea, it's always a good idea to speak with them personally and get some contact information just in case.

I told him to call me.

Yeah, he said when I receive payment, but getting a check and clearing a check are very different...

Screw it - run away. The check could clear, then unclear after 2 weeks, when they discover that it's a fraud.

Scam, Scam, Scam, Scam....when I sold my car a few months ago, I must have gotten two or three of these a day, and they were almost the exact same language, grammar, etc.

I've not seen the "wife" version before. But rest assured this is a complete and total scam.

You should accept cash and only cash. No check, including Cashier's checks, Bank Checks, Certified Checks, etc. These forms of payment are no better than if the person were to write you a personal check and they can bounce just as easily. Even the banks can't tell the difference anymore, thus nobody knows its a fake until it gets back to the bank that supposedly issued it and they tell you they didn't.

If the buyer feels uncomfortable carrying a lot of cash, make arrangements to meet them at a branch of their bank where they can write a check and give you the cash with both of you in full view of the security cameras.

Be very, very, very careful. Scams abound.

So is there anything I can do to get him in trouble? He has a Canadian email address, but he could be anywhere.

I had a guy try and scam me a few months ago when I was selling an ej20 shortblock. I was selling it for $300 and he sent a cashiers check for like $2200 and asked me if I would wire him the rest. I took it to the bank and told them I smelled something fishy. Sure enough it was a fake cashiers check. I called the cops to come over and take a look to see if I could set the guy up but they said there was nothing really I could do. All I would have been able to do was "Make a report". Sucks. I felt like taking time off work just to track the sucka down and open a can on him.

In your case, definently smells fishy. Make him send you a copy of his drivers licence and major credit card. Then do some homework and make sure he checks out.

I would go ahead with it and have the cops waiting for the guy to come pick up the car. Have them run his info and such.

They have no interest in the car!! They only want to send a fake check over and above the amount for the car expexcting you to cash it and send them the difference..guess what, when the check is found to be fraudulent guess who takes it in the behind!!!!

Yeah, the police can't/won't do anything. And it YOU try to scam them back, you'll get popped. THEN the police will be able to act, most likely. Sux.

Sometimes you have to wonder, for all the scheming, scamming, lies and cheaters; is that really easier than making an honest living?
I wouldn't want to live always looking over my shoulder. And sooner or later it's going to come to an end. Stinkin' Bastages!
