Default VW ups Beetle Turbo power, prices new R-Line model

Leftlane: http://www.leftlanenews.com/vw-ups-b...ine-model.html

Quote:
Volkswagen has announced several changes for its turbocharged, retro-inspired two-door for a minor mid-year upgrade.

All Beetle Turbos - both hardtop and convertible models - will gain a previously-detailed 210-horsepower four-cylinder turbocharged engine (a 10 pony boost). Curiously, VW is offering the more powerful, lighter weight new engine in the 2013 Beetle Turbo range, meaning that there will be both 200 and 210-pony variants on dealership lots.

In addition, all 210-horsepower Beetle Turbos will also receive special R-Line bumpers with grained black surfaces and chrome-framed turn signals to help denote their more powerful status.

Beetle Turbo R-Line
Replacing the Beetle Turbo Sunroof, Sound and Navigation model, the R-Line arrives as a late 2013 model.

Although it will share the same new engine as the standard Beetle Turbo, the Beetle Turbo R-Line gains a handful of cosmetic and functional upgrades designed to enhance its image as a sporty coupe. Standard equipment includes 19-inch "Tornado" alloy wheels, R-Line badging, HID headlamps, LED daytime running lamps, stainless steel kickplates and a "chrome vanadium" panel for the dashboard.

So far, VW has only priced the hardtop version of its 2013 Beetle Turbo R-Line, which will list from $30,135 with a six-speed manual gearbox - a $935 premium over the defunct Sunroof, Sound and Navigation trim.

Screw R-line, make a true R beetle :P (and give it fauxwd too... or you know make it how it used to be with rear engine and rear drive ).

I'm really surprised by this, I mean they featured it on the Oprah show, I really thought that would have brought male buyers by the droves.

They needed to do a little more of this:

If they really want to get guys in this car they are gonna have to give it more hp.. I remember back in 95 you could get a brand new Eclipse GST, had 210hp, weighed 2800 lbs and was 10k cheaper.. And better looking

The funny thing about this new beetle is that it is a better looking car than than the first re-release of the beetle. It is lower, wider, etc. The superbowl commercail with the beetle racing around was a perfec start to getting the males interested in it. But after that they stopped pushing it.

part of me thinks they want guys to buy the GTI.

I would much rather have a GTI since the Beetle is just a very poorly packaged version of the Golf anyway.

Again, if it was rear-engined, I'd own one.

Man, for $30k you are so close to buying an STI or EVO X. Or you can just buy a fully loaded WRX. Or spend much less and buy a Fiat Abarth, FRS, BRZ or something else. Why would someone want to buy one of these for $30k??? If it were in the low 20k's, i could see this happening, but $30k is a joke.

Why do v6 convertible mustangs sell? Same demographic, same knowledge of cars.

Not the same demographic at all. Most men will not be seen dead in a beetle convertible. A mustang convertible yes, a mini convertible maybe, but not a beetle convertible, and it's not about being fruity, the car just seems too feminine. The hardtop makes for a little more masculinity. So really the major demographic are women who want to look cute. But then you're also competing hard with the mini cooper s convertible for $28k. Also along the horizon toyota is going to release the FRS convertible which will blow both of these cars out of the water in terms of cuteness, and adds coolness to it as well.

The v6 convertible mustang is the two worst decisions you can make buying the stang. My girlfriend and I have a game where we call out what kind of peron is driving car "X" and she's gotten to the point where even she realizes 99% of the v6 vert stangs are women. On what planet has a man ever bought one hence the car knowledge comment. (and the point of my other comment being that women buy these and they don't know/care).

Does not compute. Car cannot be cute and cool in terms of looks. Mutually exclusive. However, I will keep that term around for all the BRZ owners I see .

Actually my neighbor who is about 40-50 years old is a male and owns a v6, convertible mustang.

My coworker owns a 2005ish cobra convertible, i guess your point is you need a bit more badassness to negate the cuteness of a convertible? So a male in a cobra mustang is ok, even though to the untrained eye, the cars look the same.

Who made up that definition?? You??? I don't agree with you here. I think the FRS convertible looks cool enough to be unisex, but it's a convertible which add cuteness to it. Same as the S2000 which you own. It's cute car, my high school teacher wanted one when they came out and she thought it was "cute", here words. However, when i informed her it was a manual 6 speed only, she instead bought a cavalier convertible. However, i wouldn't think a male was gay for buying one because of it's cool sportiness factors.

Have you seen the new FRS convertible preview pics??

But back to my original post and back on topic of the OP, which was referring to the hardtop only as pictured. I don't know why you brought up convertibles, pricing on that hasn't been released.

I know plenty of people who make horrible decisions too, just not normally when they're true enthusiasts of the topic.

It makes it better, yes, but that's still partly a bad decision. Nothing changes that :P.

I have and I hate it as much as I hate my own convertible (when it comes to layout... at least I didn't have a choice with the platform).

I brought up a specific car that has an overwhelmingly woman buyer population as a way to inadvertently say only dumb women would buy the car outlined in the OP. Which is fine, because there are plenty of dumb people, so this car will still find buyers, much to my dismay. Clearly, by the unnecessary length of this discussion, you either dislike stereotypes or the subtlety was lost on you. How, I don't know as it was pretty obvious what snide remarks my comment was intended to portray.

The fact that you think they are "bad decisions" shows that you like to play into stereotypes. However, i don't like to be that type of ignorant person. A larger percentage of convertible buyers are women, but not the 99% that you think. I've seen plenty of men driving down the road in convertibles. And i know several that are perfectly straight, but love their convertibles.

You also have to keep in mind, that snide remarks, comedic remarks, emotions and tone are lost in text type. I'm sure you're typing and reading it back to yourself in the same tone, however people reading on the other end will read it differently.

I find it ironic that you own an S2000 yet still believe the stereotype.
