Default Toyota plans cheaper hybrid for U.S., report says

Quote:
TOKYO -- Toyota Motor Corp. plans to launch a hybrid vehicle that is cheaper and more fuel efficient than the Toyota Prius as early as 2011, a Japanese newspaper reported today .

The vehicle would be priced around 1.5 million yen ($15,650) and deliver 94 mpg, the Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper said, without revealing how it got the information.

The car will share key parts with the Toyota's Yaris and will get double the fuel economy of the Yaris, the report said. It will be sold in the United States, Japan and Europe.

Toyota spokeswoman Yoshie Matsuura said she could not discuss future product plans. But Toyota is known to be planning a small, inexpensive Yaris-based hybrid to compete with Honda Motor Co.'s plans for a hybrid version of the Fit.

The Honda Insight starts at $19,800 in the United States, and the Prius starts at $21,000.The current Prius gets about 89 mpg, under a Japanese mileage test that is not comparable to U.S. or European tests

Honda: The Insight does not look like the Toyota Prius

Quote:
The Honda Insight has been criticized for having very close similarities to its Toyota Prius rival; however, Honda is rejecting those claims and says that it did not try to mimic the design of Toyota’s popular hybrid.

“We don’t think it looks like the Prius at all,” said Nobuki Ebisawa, managing director at Honda R&D.

“There may be some similarities in the roof line, but it is clearly different.”

Ebisawa says that the Insight shares most of its design cues with Honda’s FCX Clarity and the CR-Z concept. He said similarities between the Prius and the Insight only exist in the roof-line, which maximizes aerodynamics and makes room for a hybrid system

It is awsome that more and more cars are becoming available that suck less go go juice, but the primary problem with decreased fuel consumption will be less money in the government pocket for transportation infrastructure. I think in 2 years gas will be over $5.00 per gallon. Good to see Toyota getting off its rear end and being a competitor.

I find it ironic that all these gas savings cars are going to end up costing us more in gas.

Guess I am going to have to my part to keep the gas prices low and drive cars with poor mileage. May have to sell the MS3 and get an STI. Much worse mileage.

Which will likely usher in a tax based on the amount of miles we drive each year.
