Default 2017+ Front strut tower cap rust issue

I learned about this from another forum and I thought I'd share here since it applies to the 2017-18 Imprezas...

Apparently the caps over the front strut towers are directly underneath where the wiper assembly plastic ends and the caps aren't watertight. There are two kinds of caps, big and small. I have the small kind. I took a cap off and there is a bunch of rust under there from water intrusion.

I'm planning on mentioning this to Subaru at my next oil change, but holy cow, that is a major issue in the making (not necessarily right now, but a few years down the road).

I would seriously suggest anyone inspect theirs!

If you are still in warranty you should be good to go.
There is a TSB 05-62-18 that addresses surface rust on strut caps. Subaru will clean the rust from cap, spray with rustproof paint and install a larger diameter cap cover.
Here is the first paragraph from the bulletin:

"This bulletin provides a procedure to address customer concerns of surface rust accumulating in the top center retaining nut area of the front strut mounts. The strut mount cap / seal shape has been changed (outside diameter increased by 30mm) and reinforced to provide improved sealing against water intrusion.
Any rust accumulation as described here is cosmetic and will not impair functionality of the strut top."
