I thuoght the first gen M3 started in 1986...
anyway if it is 20 years old, its probably down on power significantly from when it was new. New it would probably have been faster than an RS, but... 20 years later probably not |

I'm about 99% certain there weren't any M3's in 1985. I think 1986 was about the first time they were available as a 1987 model. Anyways, the late 80's M3's are fantastic vehicles and are better than the RS in about every way short of age. It is a high revving, super light, RWD, well tuned for the track vehicle. I plan on getting a 1988-1991 model as a track car eventually.
^ they have a serious racing pedigree. If the car in question has fender flairs, chances are he will wipe the floor with you unless you are racing on dirt (assuming equal drivers). ~~Quentin Last edited by quentinberg007; 02-05-2005 at 07:36 PM. |

The E30 M3 was imported as a US version in years 1988 to 1991. It was available earlier in Europe. It had 200 hp and many owners modified them for more. Top speed was 143 mph and I speculate the 0 to 60 is less than 7 seconds. On the track, it is very quick and would probably dust the Subaru, but maybe on a drag strip the Subaru might show better. A WRX would probably dust the M3 on the drag strip, but on the track, that would be an interesting thing to watch.

Subaru WRX 227 hp, AWD drivetrain loss, 3100lbs BMW M3 (E30) 195 hp, RWD, 2733lbs The cars are probably seeing close to the same power at the wheels and there are major weight differences. Cool fact: The M3 fenders could hold 10" wide wheels, and the Euro Evo III version was a 2.5L making 238HP naturally aspirated. ~~Quentin |

A stock wrx would slaughter a 1986 M3 on a track. The suspension of a stock wrx is very modern and performance oriented. |

Major weight differences, and similar power eh? then why does the WRX trap in the mid 90s 1/4 mile and the e30 m3 low 90s? not to mention that the wrx is about 1 sec faster in the 1/4... |

The original M3 made it over to the United States 1988. Originally built to take on Mercedes' Cosworth-tweaked 190E 2.3-16 in FIA Group A racing, the M3 employed a 2.3-liter four-cylinder capped with a twin-cam four-valve head that was essentially one of the big six four-valve heads less two cylinders. Dropped into a modified 3 Series two-door body shell (the flared fenders, more steeply raked rear window and higher trunk lid meant only the hood was left untouched from more plebian 3s), the Bosch fuel-injected "M Power" four was rated at 192 horsepower at a wailing 6,750 rpm when it finally got to North America. "This is not a car for yuppies," wrote Car and Driver on their first exposure to the U.S.-spec M3. "This is a car for us. In case you haven't noticed, BMW's U.S. lineup has blossomed to include a dazzling array of leather-lined hot rods that beg to be flogged through the twisties and hammered on the superslabs." Stirring the five-speed manual transmission, Car and Driver blasted that 2,857-pound M3 to 60 mph in just 6.9 seconds, blitzed the quarter-mile in just 15.2 seconds with a 92-mph trap speed and screamed to a 141-mph top speed. With an as-tested price of $34,810, the M3 was at that time (and still in many minds) the ultimate BMW 3 Series. |

drag racing is the over glorification of redline abuse and lead foot disease.
its not racing. its going straight. true racing is the combination of all aspects of safely contolling a vehicle, while still pushing it to it's edge. anyone can drive like a dumbass! (enter the 2F2F crowd, street racing is NOT cool....) edit: i think i just hijacked my own dang thread |

It was a sweet hijack though.
My money would be on the M3.. all the way around. Anyone who says it won't because it's old.. or because it's suspension isn't modern needs to remove their head from betwix their buttocks. |
