Does it have a rear roof spoiler? Are the liftgate arms tight? Is the rear wiper arm tight (or the wiper motor for that matter)?

If possible, have someone sit back there while you drive over bumps to pin it down. Another possibility is a rear shoulder belt latch hitting the window, a bad latch on the lift gate itself, etc.

Default It's the latch on the liftgate!

I have a similar problem with my '99 Outback Sport. I think I have narrowed it down to the liftgate latch. Try this ... Take everything out or the back of the car (the jack, the spare, everything). Open the hatch and slam the rear driver's side door really hard. See if you hear the same sound. Now close the hatch and try it again. I was able to hear it from outside of the car.

Take a look at this thread on RS25.com http://www.rs25.com/forums/showthrea...7&page=1&pp=20

There is a small amount of adjustment in the latch and you can shim the rubber dampers that the hatch rests on to tighten it. It worked for me.
