What do David Letterman and I have in common?
We both have/had the shingles...its official I have the shingles...what do I have to look forward to? I've heard pain is one thing. Looks like it'll be awhile till I make it to a meet
Doc said its not contagious, but I read that it can be...maybe since its on my side and covered by my shirt, its not really in contact with anything/anyone? Nirmit

You have my sympathy. I had shingles in 2000. I must say it sucked bigtime. The body aches are the worst along with the headaches and nausea. Mine lasted about two weeks with the worst part being a few days in length. Definitely a good reason to stay in bed all day.
Try not to drive in the later stages since road bumps can cause pain. Hope it doesn't hit you too hard. Try and pick up some Zostrix to put on them to ease the pain and skin irriation. It worked for me. AnthonyG |

thanks for the kind words guys...I first noticed it about 3 days ago...didn't start feeling irritation and sensity till today. Went to the doctor and he gave me Zovirax (topical) and Valtrex (caplets). I "plan" to go to work and continue to do daily activities through it, but given Anthony's story some R & R might be in order. I did have the chicken pocks, so it is not one or the other type thing. The doctor informed me that shingles hits when your immune system is down, caused by stress, among other things. Mostly occurs in people over age 60. Thats all I know. I'll probably look up some info on the net.

Shingles is indeed independent of chicken pox; I had chicken pox when I was younger. Just as Nirmit mentioned, it is associated with a weakened immune system. This was verified by a family member in the medical profession.
Nirmit, don't forget your liquids, too. Tea works well! AnthonyG |

Shingles is a herpes zoster (chicken pox virus) reactivation and thankfully isn't contagious like CP, but hurts like hell. Nirmit, doc give you some neurontin or some other medication to help with nerve pain?

It is a dormant form of the chicken pox virus (like Edkwon said) and you need to have chicken pox sometime in the past to get shingles in the future. Generally associated with depressed immunity, the virus reactivates usually at an inopportune time, ie, you might already be sick or getting over something.
The grey area is if you have the chicken pox vaccine. You may or may not be able to get shingles. The shingles virus attacks root nerves, which is why the pain can be somewhat distributed over your body, but still in a confined area. It affects the main branch of the tree so all the limbs of the root tree past there are pi$$ed off. The zostrix will help, but more than likely your doctor might prescribe a systemic antiviral (Pills) like Zovirax (Acyclovir) because a creme is not going to attack the problem deeper in where it is. Good luck buddy. And yes, GET SOME REST. If you try to take it like a man, its only going to kick you in the nuts harder when the going gets tough later on. Kyle. Standard disclaimer, I'm not a doctor, this is not medical advice, I don't know what I'm talking about, I'm a bumbling idiot and should be institutionalized myself. |

I thought maybe you had a diastema (spell). It's the gap between the two front teeth, guess not.
Sorry to hear about your your shingles. I never had chicken pox & i'm 34. My brother & sister had them at the same time when we were kids. speedy recovery to you |

At least it's in the past, and I shouldn't have to worry about it again for at least another 40-some years if ever (probably). Again, get well soon. AnthonyG |

nirmit- sorry to hear about shingles... not sure if you noticed on my face, but i had shingles too about 6 years ago when i moved to LA.
i couldn't figure out what it was at first, it was a oily blister and hurt real bad...to a point i lost feeling where it blistered the worst. i called a dermitologist (sp?) and let her know my signs...then she told me to come in the next day as soon as she opened..and sure enough i was diagnosed with shingles. had chicken pox when i was like 4 and was immuned to it but when the body gets severly tired the immune system can no longer tolerate the chicken pox virus and symptoms starts showing up again. unfortunately for me, it was on my face, some get it on their stomach. i received some creme to put on the scar to dry it up..worse thing you want to do is put any type of oily ointment on it. the doc kept asking me if i had unprotected sex and insisted that i get checked for AIDS....in the back of my mind there was one ex-gf that was bothering me at the time, but denyed the tests and insisted that it was from fatique (honestly, i was freakin out at the time and with all the stress from work, i just needed some more time for those tests) took about 3 weeks to recover but my scar is still somewhat noticable on my face. i blame my job for it since i was transferred to LA and was only given 2 weeks notice to find a place to stay, move, and start work the following week. later on i did go a full health exam and blood and everything checked out normal...so i was relieved. |

thanks again guys...I have been under mucho stress at work with things going on I can't really control...not that my 50-55hrs aren't enough but the Accounting Manager put in his resignation and 1 week notice and I gotta cover his duties on top of my own. I haven't taken a full sick day since I started 3 yrs ago and can't really afford one due to the fact that the Accounting department at work will be left to Controller, me, and one collections person...wouldn't be so bad but the other 2 ladies tend to like only working 40 hrs/week. I really have to put myself out of this situation or I can see my health get worse. I'll be updating my resume this weekend and start the job hunt when I get better. Its ridiculous seeing a Controller for a $18-20 million company put in enough hours to be called full-time...what a bunch of BS! I need to release my anger somehow instead of holding it in. I'm too nice a person, so I gotta get learn to be more aggresive and put my foot down...watch out peeps...next time you see me I'll be looking for heads
Damn Ken, Yours sounded pretty bad...so far mine has been pretty manageable in regards to pain and coverage. I ts in an are right above my love handles and only big enough to cover with my hand. I'm starting to get the pain as it seems like its on day 4 or 5. Its liveable but is increasing over the last 2. I don't get sick often but when I do I'm like a little baby Jorge, mmm...pizza and beer *drool* |

best medicine is to rest, eat your favorite foods, and relax. hope you get better real soon. |
