Default Bast's MY99 Prodrive P1 Replica RS

After 2 years of ownership I've finally made the jump from RS25 to Nasioc for a "build" thread. It'll be a bit of catching up from my other journal, I apologize.

I purchased the RS in July 2013 from a Subaru 'specialist' dealer in Oregon. They had completely overhauled the engine. I picked it up at 124,500 miles with a 5-speed manual transmission and new tires. It had some blemishes (the rust spot I somehow missed until I got home), chewed up passenger doorcard, scrapes on the glovebox and a broken driver's side mirror. It came with the OBX axleback, black depo side corners and OEM subwoofer. All in all, I am completely happy with my purchase.

The main plan has been to keep the car N/A and focus on cosmetic and suspension/brake upgrades. There will be no 'lowlife' or flares or widebody. It'll be something of a Prodrive P1 replica with some v6 STi pieces. I definitely want to update and refresh all the bushings and old OE parts. A possible far future plan would be to purchase a wrecked GD STi and do a full USDM swap. I'm in no considerable rush to do that.

Default Dealer Photos & First Mods

July - September 2013:
Here's what the dealer replaced prior to my purchase (all repairs done at ~124,000 miles):
  • New OEM Subaru head gaskets
  • New OEM intake manifold gaskets
  • New OEM Subaru cam seals
  • New OEM thermostat
  • New OEM thermostat gasket
  • New OEM oil pump o-ring
  • New valve cover gaskets
  • New spark plug tube seals
  • New washer rocker grommets
  • New drive belts
  • New timing belt (OE Gates brand)
  • New spark plugs (NGK)
  • New oil and filter
  • New anitfreeze
  • New ACL rod bearings
  • New ACL main bearings
  • New piston ring set
  • Transmission flush with Redline

When I took it for a test drive, the driver's side amber corner light flew off. They replaced those with the depo black corners (yuck!). It had fading pin stripes, slight rust, a busted driver's side mirror and awful deflectors on the hood and moonroof. That said, it was a diamond in the rough and I had to have it.

Within the first couple weeks I swapped out the orange bumper lights and black corner lights. Also locally purchased a v6 grille and put that on.

Purchased brand new JDM tails from flatirons and installed. Totally changes the rear end!

RA mudflaps.

--------

There was a great 2 month span with little to no issues. Then come Friday the 13th in September 2013 and I woke up to this:

And the following Sunday.. Noticed the rear tire was flat.

A good $1,600 in damage and luckily insurance took take care of it; including 4 new tires (which I had to fight for).

Default Suspension

October 2013:
For awhile I hoarded all my suspension stuff until I had everything I needed. I was given v5 STi springs from a friend, bought KYB Excel-G struts off Amazon, Group N top hats from SubaruGenuineParts and various hardware from the local dealer.

Everything installed:

Replaced the DEPO crystal clear corners with JDM clear corners.

The car was detailed and all the pin-striping was removed (thank god)

And some random photos:

Default JDM Smooth Rear Bumper & Spats

November 2013 - January 2014:
I picked up a JDM smooth rear bumper with spats and a couple months later installed it. During this time I also moved from Portland, OR to the Bay Area, CA. The install was thankfully very straightforward. The bumper had already been cut to fit the USDM beam so it was a matter of removing the stock bumper and installing the JDM one.

I tried out red mudflaps for a bit and installed the pink grille badge.

I went to the full extent of 'Basic Subaru Owners Guide' and plasti-dipped my wheels white. The only nice thing about it was that it covered the major rash on all my wheels.

Default Black Diamond Pearl Respray

February - March 2014:
California was good to me and I found a replica v6 spoiler for $30.

But, I was also a complete idiot and took a corner too sharp in a parking garage. Luckily during this time I was shopping for a paintjob.

I decided to go with Maaco (yeah, I know, I know..) for a few reasons. One being cost and the second; this car will never be a show car and is 14+ years old. I can't justify saving up $3,000 - $10,000, or more, to take it somewhere more reputable/quality. That said, I did choose the Maaco with the 'best' reviews in the area. I had the complete car, all my parts and some rust repair for $1,500.

We took off all the lights, grille, scoop, vents, moldings (with new ones to put on), window trim, bumpers, sideskirts and whatever else we could in the parking lot. This was in hopes to make sure the parts were painted properly and not just taped off.

On March 13th I picked up the car and reassembled it in the Maaco parking lot. I had forgotten to take photos of how it looked when I got there and the process. I didn't have any help and didn't want to be there until dark so I just installed what I could to get it home.

They had ordered me a new hood and since they didn't have the lights or grille it wasn't aligned correctly and wouldn't latch. One of the employees had told me to 'take side streets home and don't go fast,'. Uhhh, yeah, no. I basically raged my face off on him and they fixed the hood so it would close completely but slightly dented it in the process. **** it, whatever.

It took me a few days to get all the small bits (moldings, foglights, etc) back on the car due to school and traveling.

There were two major spots that they clearly ****ed up but I didn't bother taking it back in.

While the car had been in paint, I purchased a set of STi pedals from Australia.

Default V6 STi Spoiler

April - May 2014:
Installed a few more things (spats and moldings). Yes, one wheel is silver. Don't worry, all the plasti-dip was harmed and removed and never reapplied.

In May we finally installed the v6 wing. Since it's a replica it's not a perfect fit (the base bows a bit away from the trunk) but it stays on and I haven't had any issues with it.

June - July 2014:
I decided to ruin the looks and reinstall the red mudflaps. I also installed rear 02/03 WRX seats.

Installed Prodrive shift knob and Cusco rear subframe brace.

And some random photos at the Alameda Naval Base.

Default Cluster, Pedals, Locking Bolts, etc

August - December 2014
Sometime in August I installed the pedal set

My birthday rolled around in September and I received/installed a v6 cluster

Mileage of v6 STi cluster: 167,948
Mileage of stock RS cluster: 139,758

I also started acquiring more parts - full set of aeroguards, Cusco ladder bars, 4/2 pots...

Installed Whiteline rear endlinks, Kartboy subframe locking bolts and HD sway bar mounts towards the end of December.

Default Aeroguards, Foglights & Brake Prep

January 2015:
I had the aeroguards painted and installed them. I also bought and installed the ion yellow foglights

We disassembled the brakes and started stripping them for paint and rebuild. It was kind of a pain stripping them.

Default Fog Light Covers & Flat Fuel Door

February - April 2015
I bought some STi decals for the replica fog covers and sampled them on the car. Since I love the foglights so much, I never really installed the covers, haha.

Late March I installed my flat fuel door that had been sitting around for about a year. We also finished up painting the brakes. All ready for install!

The start of April brought the brake install!

The hardest part of the install was getting the rotors off and the brake line bolts off (without stripping them). Other than that, I think it took us about 2 hours for each set, all said and done.

I took it upon myself to clean up the springs, not that it really matters. But it's nice to seem them cleaned, haha.

Default GD Carpet

June 2015
For a couple months I didn't really do anything to the car until I purchased a black 2006 WRX carpet. Man, that thing was gross! Someone must have driven through a pine forest and 10 shedding dogs. So many hairs. I took about an hour or two just cleaning it and there's still hair stuck in the threads.

Once clean, time to uninstall poopy RS carpet.

Seats out

Console out

Carpet out

Carpets side by side

Carpet thrown in

The passenger side was super cramped so I had to cut it to match the old RS carpet

The rear of the driver side fits haphazardly, mostly due to the backing of the carpet

Default GD Carpet

June 2015
The trunk release area had to be cut in order to fit as well. The cut was made behind the release.

I used the cut fabric and just stuck it in front.

I had to cut holes for the seat belt bolts. I didn't really get good photos of that. If you do this, you'll figure it out.

Started to put things back in

The biggest fitment issues (for coupes anyway) is where the GD carpet would meet the B pillar in the sedan/wagon.

The passenger side is much worse for some reason

Driver side, not too bad, but still an eyesore

I wasn't able to get the RS carpet clips stapled onto the GD carpet so it's not as secure as it could be, but the door trim seems to keep it in place until I get a staple gun.

Some other issues.. the dead pedal area sticks out quite a bit

Passenger side area is a bit short

The GD seat belt holes are ugly looking as well.

The GD footwell area isn't the same as the RS, so it's not completely flat. Kinda bulgy and awkward. But your feet go there... so, it's all good.

I also had some issues with the front seat holes. I had to cut the holes a bit bigger so that the bolts wouldn't get stuck. I didn't take any photos of the front seats back in since I was mad about a couple troubling bolts and stripped threads. At some point I'll fix all the gaps, most likely with black carpet cut from somewhere.

Default Limited Trim & Tint Removal

July - August 2015
I bought some GD STi mats and tried my hand at vinyl wrapping. I bought some aluminum brushed vinyl to do my HVAC face panel and it came out OK.. I clearly cannot cut smooth circles haha. But it'll do for now until I get over it. Sadly, I ripped a piece of it when installing the center console back in. That steering wheel is an eyesore and I can't decide between the STi v7 or v4.

I also bought a limited shifter trim with the badge. The empty holes were bugging me, haha. Sent out from Japan on 8/3 and arrived today. I took the badge off the one that came in and put it on the brand new piece already in my car. Pardon the cell phone photos..

I found my window tint to be peeling and did what any child would do and ripped it off.

Default Prodrive P1 Seats

August 2015
Now we're almost up to date.

In July I had won an auction on eBay for a complete set of Prodrive P1 seats and doorcards from the UK. It took a little over a month and a half to arrive by sea and go through customs/travel across the U.S. Picking up the seats was the biggest headache EVER. In total the trip to get them from customs and the warehouse was about 4.5 hours. Mostly because it was a bit of a drive to the port and then the man "helping" us at U.S. Customs was a total prick. Then of course the warehouse had to take their sweet time too.

Anyway.. the company who sold the seats wrapped them beautifully and there didn't appear to be any damage from shipping. Unfortunately I didn't get a whole lot of time today due to other circumstances to install everything. I got as far as the front doorcards and audio panel. I started removing all my tint (yay fishbowl!) and got the rear windows removed before the seats arrived. The rear glass had of course decided to be a ****. I ran out of light before I could really get a good start on it and it's not peeling off like I would like it to.

I spent way too much time removing my rear tint; lots of scraping away leftover bits of old, purpled tint. But, now I have a fishbowl and I like it.

I spent basically all day in the garage installing everything and the car looks so much newer. One of the rear door cards needed to be fixed (missing some clips) so I used my old card to donate some. There is a slight stain/dirt spot on the rear seat but I didn't have anything to clean it and I barely notice it. Some scratches on all the cards but overall in much better condition that my OE ones.

The rear tint was suuuuuch a bitch.

I accidentally cracked my C pillar when removing it.. Not stoked on that but oh well. Rear cards in:

Rear seat:

Front seats go in:

It is so so nice to have chassis specific seats back in the car. I no longer feel like I'm sitting in a semi and towering over the steering wheel. And the hug. Hugs for daysss from these seats.

Now I need to source some Prodrive P1 17in wheels, P1 fog lights and covers, P1 lip, P1 spoiler... and a better looking steering wheel.

Prodrive all things!

Congrats, now we're all up to date.

Default 2015 STi Rack & GT Spec Fender Braces

September - October 2015

Got the '15 STi rack bolted up and the steering lines sorted out. I originally bought the Flat4 Motorsport steering line kit but the provided fittings kept leaking. We ordered some Russell and Earl fittings but still ran into problems with lines not feeling secure at all. And leaks..

Eventually we just gave up and put the stock lines in. But what do you know, they leaked too.. So, ordered brand spankin' new lines and no leaks!

2015 STi rack was prepped to go in with adapters to run the shorter RS lengths.

Old and busted rack came out

Whiteline bits in. Gonna need to do the ball joints separately since we don't have the proper tool and need to update to GC8 LCAs anyway.

I also bought a set of GT Spec fender braces. Ugh, such a nice product.

Got the braces both in. I followed this guide for removing the fenders: http://www.rs25.com/forums/f105/t118...r-removal.html

Very straightforward except for 3 pesky bolts that would not come off. The bolt at the bottom of the fender (underneath the side skirts) was a pain on both sides. Had to blowtorch them to get them off. There was another bolt in the engine bay that is so stripped and ****ed up that we just worked with the fender still on.

The install itself was fine, but the doors are no simple task to keep in the right position. Damn coupe doors are heavy! Now they're not aligned.

The rack and braces made a great improvement; now the biggest thing holding the car back are my tires.
