2.5 sohc with knock
I have a motor from my old 99 2.5 RS in my shop. It developed a rod knock pretty quickly after doing the head gaskets and clutch, less that 3k miles. My question is where to start if I want to repair it, are there any common causes of knocking sounds on this engine?
I may be getting another Subaru that may need an engine and would like to get this one ready. The car it would go in is a 98 Legacy Outback. I think thats a dohc car, is there anything I need to be concerned about to swap in a sohc motor? |

I'd first check the outback to make sure whether it has a Ej22 or Ej25. If it has An Ej22 then there is no problem, if it has a Ej25 (DOHC) then it might have more connectors for the extra cam sensors and possible need the 2.2 ecu. Your best bet is to just match the engine it came with to avoid swapping wiring harnesses, besides you don't want to down grade to a 2.2.
As far as the knock, you might need to rebuild the motor. start by compression testing the engine to make sure valves and piston rings are ok. If the numbers are good then you might need new rod bearings or have piston slap(highly unlikely). Besides that check the oil pressure, lower than usual pressure can be a sign too much bearing clearance. |
