from what I read, that seems to be ok. Set up a WiFi network, use a firewall to prevent anyone from outside the network, and warn the WiFi users about the potential danger. At least for public access WiFis.

so wouldnt federal law trump this?

isn't this the same as denver (the city) allowing personal possesion of pot <1oz even though its still illegal at the federal level?

it is pretty stupid. even if you have WEP enabled and do filtering, such as by MAC address, you need a "gateway server"

snip

The proposed law has two prongs: First, "public Internet access" may not be provided without a network gateway server equipped with a firewall. Second, any business or home office that stores personal information also must install such a firewall-outfitted server even if its wireless connection is encrypted and not open to the public. All such businesses would be required to register with the county within 90 days.

so are portland and san francisco... this is likely something being promoted by non-wifi providers (comcast, verizon, etc) to prevent free wi-fi from taking off.

Simpsons did it!

And by Simpsons, I mean me. I built the first city-wide wifi network. Too bad a s****y business model and sucker for a boss doomed it to obscurity and asset sell-off

Move there and go around offering services to secure a WiFi connection for $40 a pop, make a fortune.

Seriously, that's like saying you make it a law to lock your door. How do you go about enforcing that? And what about the people who WANT to leave it sans-encryption and offer it to their neighbors for free?
