Default how to upgrade MY96 ej25 to MY97 & up?

Just incase anyone doesnt know, the 96 Legacy GT was the first USDM suby to get the dohc ej25. It has 10 less hp than the next years ej25's. It also requires premium fuel. Does anyone know exactly what the differance is between the internals of the 96 ej25 and the later years ej25?

Do any tech gurus know if I could just toss some 98 dohc heads on and run regular fuel and have 10 more hp?

There are timing issues associated with the use of premium fuel (which would require a different ecu). I have a feeling that the compression ratio was bumped up slightly for the 97GTs, giving the engine that 10 extra hp. It could also be the cams in the heads having a more aggressive lobing. I can't be too sure. I think you'd be better off going the FI route than trying to take parts from the newer model GTs.

But that's just me.

Forced induction is what I'm trying to do, but since I'm already running on premium gas what will I run once I do add the turbo, I don't want to be buying octane booster every gas-up (I will be doing the early 90's legacy turbo conversion, I WONT be using TEC2 or link.) Thats why Im trying to figure this out.
