Default JDM GC8 : New owner, new headache. Wont start

Hey everyone, just picked up a 93 GC8, RHD genuine JDM equipped with the EJ20G engine. I picked it up not running and I'm trying to get it going before the snow hits. I am pretty knowledgable around cars but I have never really worked on the subaru chasis other than basic boltons so I'm not too familiar in how the engines operate and interact with the electronics. I'll try to cut to the chase but I don't want to leave anything out so excuse me if it drags on. Anways...

Original owner said one day the speedo stopped working but car was fine otherwise, the next day he parked the car and when he came out to start it, nothing. Got it towed to a friends place to solve the problem where it sat for a year after they tried but to no avail.

The place that had the car did the following : verified/set timing belt, switched cam angle sensor and crank angle sensor, converted to new style coilpacks (eliminated igniter).

Since having the vehicle I have done the following : Checked all grounds on engine, verified grounds on ECU with voltmeter, verified all 12v leads on ECU according to pinout diagram, verified 12V ignition to coils/injectors/engine harness, verified correct timing, verified coilpack conversion wiring (still have to cross reference part numbers on coilpacks to confirm compatibility.)

So what happens is that the car cranks, has fuel, but no spark. Plugs are new, coilpacks look new but as mentioned I will run the part number to make sure they are right, everything is plugged in. I have put a voltmeter on the ignition outputs from the ecu and they are the following : Continuity to ground with key OFF and 0.05V with the key on. I was under the impression that the 4 wires going into the igniter (or coils in this case now) should be 12 volts? Does anyone have any ideas or can think of something I may have overlooked?

on the yellow wire to all of your coils you should have no power with key off and batt voltage with key in start and run.

the other wire should go to the ECU this is where it gets its ground, they should be on pin 1.2.3.4. on the 26 pin connector. with the new coils make sure you also have a good ground at each coil...

How did you test to verify that you are getting spark? You checked the wiring on the coilpacks but how do you know you arent getting spark? If you are actually getting spark then you might just have some injectors that have gone bad.

I'm not questioning your ability, I'm just curious how you did it.

Make sure you are getting a signal being sent from the ECU to the ignition module, then from ignition module to the coils. Then a good ground on the coils.

Check to make sure your crank and cam sensors are picking up and sending a signal to the ECU.

The system is VERY simple. And as long as the ECU is seeing the proper timing, and the signal from the ECU is getting to the module, and going from module to coils there is no reason why it would not spark as long as all the grounds are good.

The ignition moduel IIRC is located in front of the right strut tower, next to all MAP sensor and boost solenoid.

ended up undoing everything that was previously done, switched out cam angle, crank angle, re-wired in igniter and original coilpacks and boom. Started right up

I'm pretty sure something went wrong with either the crank angle sensor or cam angle sensor they used (wasnt the proper part although it did look pretty much the same) or else messed up pin-outs on the new style coilpacks. Car is a blast tho, very happy.

check or try new cam/crank sensors. Mine would crank but not start. It was a bad cam sensor.

The rule is.

1. Fuel
2. Air
3. Spark.

You have no spark, so it either is a wiring issue, maybe a fuse issue.
